Watermelon is delicious as it is, there is no question about that. However watermelon is more versatile than you might think and pairs well with a variety of other fruit.

This Slushie is just one fun way you can dress up a watermelon this summer.

Is Watermelon Healthy?

There is nothing my family loves more on a hot summer day than to bite into a wedge of cool, refreshing watermelon.

It is such a great way to keep hydrated since watermelon is 92% water.

That isn’t all though, it really packs a healthy punch, with high levels of an antioxidant known as lycopene and an important amino acid called citrulline, plus it is low in calories and sodium, but high in potasium – all of which may improve heart health and offers a myriad of other health benefits.

It’s also a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin C.

It’s such a healthy snack, but my kids don’t think about that – they just love the sweet taste!

Tips for Choosing a Perfect Watermelon

The secret to making the best watermelon slushies, is to have a perfectly sweet watermelon.

Whether large or small, a watermelon should feel heavy for it’s size. Look for a round watermelon vs. elongated.

Watermelons develop a slightly flat spot where they rest on the ground. When this spot is creamy yellow, the watermelon is ripe.

This almost always results in picking out a super sweet, juicy watermelon.  The kind you just can’t stop eating.

Can I Make this Watermelon Slushie Ahead of Time?

Drink your slush immediately! Blended watermelon tends to separate if it sits for too long, which can make this slushie a little unappetizing.

If you want to make it ahead, the most you can do is prep and freeze your fruit ready to blend when you want to serve it.

How to Store Watermelon Slushies

Since this does not store well, your best bet is to pour any leftovers into ice pop moulds and freeze for a refreshing treat later on!

How to Freeze Watermelon

To get the most flavour out of this slushie, you will want to freeze your watermelon so you can get a nice thick consistency with loads of flavour. You can skip the ice entirely if you freeze the watermelon first!

In order to freeze your watermelon, after cutting your watermelon into cubes, lay it all out in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze for 3-4 hours then transfer to an airtight container until needed.

Can I add sugar to this Fruit Slushie?

If your watermelon turns out not sweet enough you can definitely add sugar to sweeten this slushie up.

To do so you will want to make a simple syrup by bringing a cup of water and a cup of your favourite sweetener to a simmer until the sweetener is dissolved. Allow the syrup to cool before adding a little at a time to your slushie until you have it to the sweetness level you desire.

Watermelon, strawberries and a lime.
