Who Invented the Shirley Temple?
This popular drink named after the famous child actress Shirley Temple, was invented in 1930s Hollywood at The Brown Derby restaurant.
Supposedly, it was created one day when the child star came into a restaurant with her parents and was upset with her parents sipping old-fashioneds, wanting a fun drink for herself. The bartender whipped up a mocktail for her topped off with maraschino cherries, and the sweet drink quickly became a sensation.
Shirley Temple Black actually came to despise the drink herself as it was continuously made for her. She actually found it too sweet for her tastes.
What is Grenadine?
Grenadine is a non-alcoholic bar syrup made from pomegranate juice. It is used in cocktails and other drinks for its sweet, and slightly tart flavor. It is non-alcoholic, and can be found in the grocery store in the same aisle as club sodas.
Grenadine can last for up to 2 years if unopened, and 6 months if opened and stored properly in the refrigerator. To extend its shelf life, keep unopened grenadine in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cabinet.
Make a Roy Rogers
If you are looking for another fun mocktail using grenadine, then a Roy Rogers is just what you are looking for. It is similar to a Shirley temple, but it swaps the orange juice and citrus soda for cola. This is a classic drink loved by kids and adults alike. It’s similar in flavour to a cherry coke – only better!
Garnish your Roy Rogers with a maraschino cherry for another fun kiddie cocktail.
How to Make Shirley Temple Party Punch
Serving a crowd? No problem! Pull out your punch bowl and get ready for a delicious party punch. It’s easy to modify this Shirley Temple drink recipe into a party punch.
Add a generous amount of ice to your punch bowl. Pour in 8 cups of chilled orange juice, 4 litres of lemon-lime soda, and a 12 oz bottle of grenadine. Stir gently to combine.
Garnish with orange slices and maraschino cherries.
You don’t need any equipment at all to make this classic mocktail.
I would recommend using a 16 oz Highball glass or a 500 mL mason jar for serving. Any tall glass will work as long as it can hold about 16 oz.
You will also want picks for the garnishes. I used these gold cocktail picks for my garnish, but you might want to use plastic sword picks or even tropical umbrella picks when serving kids.
About the Ingredients for a Classic Shirley Temple
This is an easy recipe made with basic ingredients with a refreshing citrus flavour.
Note: Your orange juice and soda should be chilled prior to making this delicious virgin drink.
Orange juice – I like to use pulp-free orange juice, do not substitute with orange drinks.
Soda – We used 7-up but sprite is a good option. Some people like to make theirs with ginger ale instead or half lemon-lime soda and half ginger ale. Personally I enjoy the refreshing citrus flavour. You can also make your own citrus soda by combining lemon juice with club soda.
Grenadine – Grenadine syrup is made from pomegranate and has a brilliant red colour. Do not substitute with pomegranate syrup though as it is not as sweet, and quite a bit tart. If you need a good substitute then maraschino cherry juice is your best bet for flavour and weight. You could also use cranberry juice but it isn’t as sweet or as heavy as grenadine so you won’t get the same look or flavour. You can also easily adjust the sweetness of the drink by adjusting the amount of grenadine you add.
Garnishes – Garnish as desired. Citrus slices, maraschino cherries, and umbrellas on top of the drink are a fun way to fancy it up! Swiss chalet serves their garnished with a slice of orange, and a maraschino cherry on a cute little plastic sword pick.
