Is Pancake Batter the Same as Waffle Batter?

Pancake batter and waffle batter are similar, but not the same.

Waffle batter has more eggs and fat than pancake batter. This results in a crispier, less dense waffle.

While you can put pancake batter in a waffle maker, it will not produce the same results as waffle batter. The texture and taste will be different, so it is best to stick to waffle batter for the perfect waffles!

Variation Ideas for Homemade Strawberry Waffles

  • Try other fresh fruit. Use raspberries or blueberries to make these waffles. Try fresh peaches too!
  • Waffles can be made with both whole wheat and white flour.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon or nutmeg powder to the batter
  • If you want to add some protein to your waffles, try adding 1/4 a cup of vanilla protein powder. You can also try adding nuts, seeds, or other nutritional ingredients.
  • For even more strawberry flavour, serve with strawberry syrup.

Tips for Making the BEST Fluffy Waffles

  • Always spoon and level your flour to make sure you don’t end up with dense waffles.
  • Use room temperature ingredients so that the batter combines well.
  • Whip your egg whites for the fluffiest pancakes! (Read section below.)
  • Do not over-mix the batter, it should be a little bit lumpy.
  • Make sure you have a good waffle maker that gets good and hot.
  • Different waffle makers may take more or less time to cook. If you’re new to waffle making, or using a new waffle maker, it may take some trial and error to get the timing just right!
  • Make sure your waffle iron is hot enough before adding the batter. An iron that’s too cool will cause your waffle to stick to the pan.

Use Fresh Local Strawberries for the BEST Flavour

If you find the waffles are bland then it is likely because you used bland strawberries. These strawberry waffles are best when made with ripe, in season, local strawberries. I find even off-season greenhouse grown local strawberries are better in flavour than imported berries. The flavour difference between most local strawberries and imported strawberries is unreal.

If you can’t find really delicious strawberries, that is OK! You can fix the flavour by macerating the chopped strawberries with about a tablespoon of sugar for about 30 minutes before adding them to the batter. Set aside the resulting syrup to serve with the waffles!

You can also increase the flavour of the waffles even more by using fresh strawberries to make a strawberry sauce and use that in place of the strawberry jam used here.

How to Get Super Light and Fluffy Waffles

The key to getting incredibly fluffy insides for your crispy waffles is to separate the egg white from the yolk, and then whip the egg white until they hold stiff peaks.

Once your egg whites hold a stiff peak you will want fold them into the batter (as the last ingredient added.) This step really only takes a few minutes but it makes a world of difference.

I left this step out of the recipe as written as the waffles are light and fluffy to start with as long as you don’t overwork the batter once you’ve added the flour. It can be a bit more work that might not be worth it for a smaller batch, but if you are doubling or tripling the recipe then I would encourage you to take the extra step.

How to Keep Waffles Warm

If you want to keep the waffles warm while making a large batch to serve at once, then you can keep the waffles warm in the oven.

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit and place a baking sheet in the oven. As the waffles are finished cooking, place them on the baking sheet to stay warm while you make the remaining waffles.

Do not stack or overlap the waffles in the oven. Placing them on top of each other will create steam and they will lose their crispiness.

How to Store Leftover Homemade Waffles

If you have leftover waffles, there are a few different ways that you can store them. One option is to place them in an airtight bag or container and store them in the fridge for up to four days.

You can also freeze waffles by flash freezing them in a single layer on a baking sheet then placing them in a freezer-safe bag or container and storing them for up to three months.

How to Reheat Homemade Waffles

To keep your waffles nice and crispy, you will want to reheat them in the oven instead of the microwave. Place them on a parchment lined baking sheet at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for about ten minutes or until warmed through and slightly crisp.

If you have an airfryer, pop them in for 30 seconds to 1 minute for perfect crispy edges. Another option that I love for waffles is a simple toaster, but this will do the job only for whole waffles!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you can make the batter ahead of time, keep it in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Omit the strawberries and jam and add them at the last minute when you are ready.

Pure maple syrup is an obvious go-to topping but you can certainly get creative here! Try a dusting or powdered sugar, a dollop of Greek yogourt or whipped cream. About the Equipment Needed to Make Strawberry Waffles

  • Belgian Waffle iron
  • Medium bowl
  • Large bowl

When making homemade waffles you will need a waffle maker. If you are looking for a waffle maker then I would recommend the Hamilton Beach Belgian style flip waffle maker. It makes the best crispy edges and fluffy insides.

Your waffle maker really does make a difference, so if you are consistently disappointed with your waffles it is likely time to get a different waffle maker. If your waffle maker doesn’t get hot enough, you will never got fluffy pancakes with crisp edges.

If you don’t love your waffle maker, a new one really could make all the difference.

Please also keep in mind the difference between Belgian waffles and standard waffles. While this recipe can be used for either style of waffle maker, I would highly recommend using a Belgian waffle maker. Belgian waffles are taller and fluffier with deeper grids for holding as much toppings as you like.

If you’re eating Belgian waffles, remember that a serving size is ½ of the waffle. If you’re making standard waffles, the serving size is one waffle.

About the Ingredients Needed to Make Strawberry Waffles

These delicious waffles are made with just a few basic ingredients.

Flour – Make sure you spoon and level your flour. If you measure incorrectly you may end up with dense waffles.

Sugar – Just a touch of sugar to balance out the flavour of the batter.

Baking Powder – To leaven your waffles, make sure it is fresh, or no older than 6 months so it can do it’s best work.

Salt – If you use salted butter then reduce to about 1/4 teaspoon of additional salt.

Eggs – Use room temperature eggs for the best results.

Milk – Whole milk will give you the best flavour, but any milk fat percentage will do. Use room temperature milk for best results. You can also use unsweetened non-dairy milks or buttermilk as substitutes.

Yogourt – Use Vanilla Greek yogourt or plain Greek yogourt with a teaspoon of vanilla extract to reduce the sugar. You can also omit the water and instead use the same amount of heavy cream. The yogourt or cream should be room temperature.

Oil – You can substitute with melted butter if desired.

Vanilla – Real vanilla extract is best but feel free to use artificial if that is what you have on hand.

Strawberries – A mixture of strawberry jam and fresh strawberries provide loads of strawberry flavour and bits. For best results use in-season local strawberries. You can use frozen strawberries, but in that case do not add the water. If your strawberries aren’t as sweet or flavourful as you would like then macerate the berries with about a tablespoon of sugar for about 30 minutes before adding them to the batter. Set aside the resulting syrup to serve with the waffles!
