Why You Will LOVE This Recipe
- Rich and creamy indulgence
- Intense strawberry flavour
- A refreshing and classic summer treat
- Super easy to make with just a blender.
- Made without strawberry syrup. Just pure, fresh strawberries.
- Pretty in pink!
Strawberry Milkshake Variations
- Make it a strawberry malt by adding a few tablespoons of malted milk powder.
- Use strawberry ice cream for a double-strawberry milkshake.
- Make it dairy-free! Use dairy-free ice cream and dairy-free milk for a vegan or dairy-free milkshake.
- Add a banana for a Strawberry Banana Milkshake. The banana will also work as a thickener!
Tips for the Best Strawberry Milkshake
- Use good quality ice cream, it really does make a difference.
- Serve in glasses that have been chilled in the freezer to keep the shakes colder for longer.
- Do not add the full amount of milk immediately. Add the milk slowly until you reach your preferred consistency.
- For a thicker milkshake, start with less milk, and for a thinner milkshake, add extra milk.
- For even more strawberry flavour, use a good-quality strawberry ice cream.
- Do not over-blend the shake. The more you blend, the thinner the strawberry milkshake will end up.
How to Store Leftover Strawberry Milkshakes
This milkshake is best served immediately.
You can store leftover milkshake in the fridge for a few hours, but the texture does tend to change if left longer than that.
For longer term storage, store any leftover milkshake in the freezer in an airtight container for up to two months. When ready to enjoy, transfer to the fridge for about 30 minutes and then run it through your blender again.
About the Equipment Needed for Homemade Milkshakes
The only thing you need is a blender.
Be sure you are using a high speed blender that can handle frozen ingredients if you opt to use frozen strawberries. Lower power blenders may be unable to deal with making thicker shakes using frozen fruit, if your blender is struggling, let the strawberries thaw just a little bit.
I have been using a Blendtec blender for almost 10 years now, and it is used on a constant basis so that would be my own recommendation. It easily handles frozen ingredients.
About the Ingredients for Homemade Strawberry Milkshakes
Strawberries – Wash, dry and hull your strawberries. Slice the strawberries in slices, halves or quarters. You can substitute with frozen strawberries for a super thick milkshake. If you choose to use frozen strawberries then skip the maceration and add the sugar into the blender with the frozen berries. You may need a little more milk if using frozen strawberries.
Sugar – For macerating the strawberries. Macerating the strawberries brings out their very best flavour, and can make even off-season berries taste amazing. If your strawberries are local and in-season you may be able to skip macerating the berries without sacrificing too much flavour.
Ice cream – Good quality vanilla ice cream is key here. For an even stronger strawberry flavour, use a good quality strawberry ice cream (avoid artificial colours and flavours, it will ruin your milkshake.) You can substitute with dairy free ice cream or even vanilla frozen yogourt, but full-fat dairy ice cream will yield the thickest, creamiest milkshake. A cup of ice cream is about 2 scoops.
Milk – Whole milk will give you the best flavour and results, but any milk will do really. You can substitute with sweetened or unsweetened dairy free milk.
Vanilla extract – Pure vanilla extract will give the best flavour, however you can use artificial vanilla extract if you desire.
