Whether Dad is a history buff, the consummate handyman, a sports enthusiast, a lover of fine cars, or has a soft spot for superheroes and Sith Lords, We’ve got Father’s Day covered with an impressive array of titles that are guaranteed to put a smile on his face – all specially priced for a limited time…
I love giving books as gifts. The main reason being that books are useful and are great for unplugged entertainment. The other reason being that you can show how well you know someone by the book you choose for them. What better way to acknowledge your father or the father of your children?
There are tons of different topics to choose from in DK’s Father’ Day boutique. I know the men in my life though, and the picking was easy. I got Car for my husband and Smithsonian Timelines of Science for my father.
Car: The Definitive Visual History of the Automobile
Tracing the history of the automobile, from the first prototypes to the super cars of today, Car covers the technological developments and manufacture of cars, the cultural backdrop against which the various models arose, and the enduring impact the car has had on society as an object of curiosity, symbol of luxury, and item of necessity.
The most lavishly illustrated treatment of the subject on the market, featuring the most noteworthy cars of each decade in beautifully photographed catalogs, Car is truly an international view of the automobile through time, with histories of the men and machines that created brands which are now household names.
When my husband got home from work and saw Car sitting there he kind of dismissed it by waving it off and asking what he wanted a book for. I just left it at that because I know better than to insist. We had planned to sit down and watch a movie together after Keira and Ava went to bed so I was a little surprised when I found him sitting at the kitchen table, drinking coffee and flipping through Car. I was even more surprised when he turned down the movie in favour of Car! Literally unheard of in this house.
Suffice to say, he is in love with this title!
I really enjoy it too. It is full of pictures of various models and makes from all over the world that are presented in order of decade from the very first models right up to modern economical cars. There is a lot of eye candy in this book, but there are also features on some of the top manufacturers that detail their rise.
It’s really fascinating to flip through this title and see the progression in not only technology but style.
Smithsonian Timelines of Science
From the discovery of penicillin to the advent of the Internet, science has been an invaluable part of the human experience.
Produced in association with the Smithsonian Institution and highlighting the theories, breakthroughs, and key thinkers that shaped the history of science, Timelines of Science is an informative guide to the history of scientific discovery and technology that follows the path chronologically, and explores everything from ancient Greek geometry to quantum physics.
Filled with striking visuals, including specially commissioned photography, arresting infographics, and illustrations that illuminate technological discovery, Timelines of Science includes major advances in all the sciences, including biology, chemistry, physics, and astronomy.
This is an amazing title for the curious minded. It reminded me of the days I spent as a child flipping through my parents set of Encyclopedia’s, reading whatever section I landed on and being amazed at all the knowledge.
It is, as usual, packed with lots of great photos and illustrations as well as wonderful facts and stories. It is organized on a timeline (thus the title). The layout would have bothered me if it was meant to be a pure reference book as you would have to flip from section to section just to find all the information on one topic. It is, however, intended more as a coffee table book and thus the layout isn’t really an issue. If I did need information on a particular topic though the index is quite detailed.
Disclosure: I received the above mentioned product in order to facilitate this review. All thoughts and opinions are honest and my own.
