This time of year means back to school with all the supplies and homework that the school year entails.ย  Parents with children who have speech or language delays, learn differently, want to augment school lessons, who home school or even those who just want to give their kids a head start may include a round or two of educational games in with the usual routine.ย  This is a great way to get your children engaged and learning without the usual fuss.

On the hunt for great educational games?ย  Super Duperยฎ Publications is a great place to start looking!ย ย Super Duperยฎ Publications began as a desire for easy-to-use therapy materials for children with speech and language delays by Sharon Webber.ย  She created her own therapy meterials while working as a Speech-Language Pathologist in public schools.ย  Thomas Webber, an attourney, soon joined her in developing new therapy materials.ย  What started in 1986 as two products and two types of stickers has turned into a successful business providing hundreds of fun therapy materials that children will actually love learning with.

No matter the skill that needs improving, you can browse their extensive website and online store, www.SuperDuperInc.com, and discover hundreds of enticing products created by language professionals.ย  Each game or activity lists right on the website what skills it improves, so youโ€™re sure to get the item that works on the specific skill you would be hoping to target with your child.ย

Not sure where to start?ย  Super Duper Publications top sellers include:

After looking through the top products I decided that Word FLIPS and the MagneTalk Match-Up Adventure Kit with Barrier would be some great tools for working with Keira.ย

Word FLIPSยฎ

Keira is now 20 months and has not begun talking properly and has been referred to a speech therapist.ย  Since there is a long waiting list to begin therapy I thought it would be a great idea to try out the Word flips and get a head start.ย  She currently is able to answer things like โ€œWhat sound does a cow make?โ€ย  Her answer?ย  โ€œBoooo booo!โ€ย  โ€œWhat sound does a duck make?โ€ย  Well apparently ducks say โ€œGah gahโ€ in a somewhat evil sounding tone.ย  Dogs also say โ€œBuff Buff!โ€ Cute, but honestly it is a little worrisome that these are the only โ€œwordsโ€ we can get her to say and they arenโ€™t exactly spot on.

Word FLIPSโ„ข for Learning Intelligible Production of Speech is meant for children PreK and up and is a must for children with speech delays.ย  It helps teach real words while practising up tp three repetitions of sound sequences.ย ย  Word Flips includes three identical 40-word card sets divided into sections according to consonant placement (bilabial, alveolar, velar, and palatal).ย

To begin you can have your child repeat identical developing sounds such as โ€œBoo, Boo, Booโ€.ย  Other ways use Word Flips include practising a variety of sequences such as โ€œtie, tea, shoeโ€, repeating words with the same consonant but a different vowel โ€œboo, bee, byeโ€, repeating words with theย  same vowel but different consonant โ€œbye, pieโ€.ย  You can also combine the words to form other words (for example โ€œTie, kneeโ€ can be combined to form the word โ€œtinyโ€.ย  The book includes a list of words you can form this way using the words in the book.ย  For more advanced usage you can even combine words into simple sentences.

I like that Word Flips is so easy to use, carry around and store thanks to the spiral bounding and the built in easel so you can stand it upright as you get to work.ย ย  The illustrations are also clearly appealing to children as Keira canโ€™t get enough of looking at the pictures.ย ย  The fact that the pictures are done so well helps Keira grasp the meaning of the words.ย

So far we are only working on repeating developing sounds which is fine since Keira is so young.ย  At the moment she can repeat โ€œbooโ€ but due to her age she is soon only interested in flipping the cards to see the other pictures.ย  This is fine as it gives her the chance to learn other words.

MagneTalk Match-up Adventure Kit with Barrier

Magne-Talk Barrier Game

MagneTalkยฎ Match-up Adventures Kit (Language-Based Magnetic Barrier Games and Activities)ย is meant for children PreK to Grade 5 to target language and listening skills.ย  Specifically it helps children learn to follow directions, use deductive reasoning, to give directions, increases vocabulary, helps with auditory memory, storytelling, categorization, rhying and listening.ย  What a list!ย

The MagneTalk Match-up Adventures Kit includes:
  • 10 gorgeous game boards (two of each scene: camping, picnic, outer space, ocean, and grocery store)
  • 2-sided magnetic, dry erase tabletop easel (12โ€ณ x 16โ€ณ)
  • 10 magnets for each game board (100 magnetic pieces)
  • 34-page reproducible activity book with a CD-ROM (that includes a French translation) for easy printing
  • Dry erase marker

I love that this kit has its own bag with pockets to keep the magnets organized which fits inside a larger pink bag along with the barrier.ย  It is so compact and easy to store thanks to the bags.ย  The entire set including magnets seem quite durable and sturdy.

This is a Barrier game, which for those unfamiliar, requires two or more players along with a barrier to block each players view of their materials. ย  Each player has the same set of materials in front of them and take turns giving each other directions as to how to arrange the materials in front of them without any visual cues. The goal is to have both playersโ€™ materials look the same at the end of the game.

Since Keira isnโ€™t verbal yet and is quite young we play an extremely modified version of the game where I just give her simple directions like โ€œPut the fish on the boardโ€.ย  Sometimes it ends up on the board, other times she will put it in my hand.ย  I think that is pretty typical for her age though and will improve with time.ย  The recommended age for this is actually 3 yrs + but I honestly think that even at Keiraโ€™s age (18 months +) it can be used appropriately to work on several different skills.ย  Just donโ€™t expect your 18 month old to suddenly understand or be able to articulate something like โ€œPut the fish in the river in front of the boy in the ripple made by his fishing line.โ€
