When Robb Monkman was held at gunpoint during a home invasion while in college several years he felt inspired to do more for on and off campus safety. He created a personal safety tool that could be used to silently and discreetly alert a wide network, including the authorities, of an emergency and its location. React Mobile safety app is this tool, and it was officially launched in March 2013, after a year of beta testing, free for iPhone and Android.
How it Works
React Mobile helps you turn your smartphone into a powerful lifeline.
For everyday use the app has a “Follow me” feature which allows you to self select family and friends to track you in real-time whenever you may be concerned for your safety. This feature is perfect for keeping track of your kids, for people who tend to go for a run alone early in the morning or late at night, meeting someone for the first time etc… It is for those times when you want the peace of mind knowing that those you trust are able to track you in real-time. Just touch “I’m Safe” to let your contacts know you have arrived at your destination safely. Your contacts do not need to have the app installed in order to be able to track you or receive alerts.
If an emergency situation does occurs, you can escalate to an SOS alert by pressing the SOS shield on the app. This sends out a panic alert containing a link to your GPS location to selected emergency contacts via test message and e-mail. You can also opt to post the alert to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. You are then prompted to call 911. Should you happen to lose your GPS signal while the app is active, the last good GPS location will still be saved and available for your contacts to see.
