Got some shrimp in your freezer, waiting to be put to use? This honey cajun shrimp recipe is worth a try!
Calling all seafood lovers, here’s a delicious and incredibly easy shrimp recipe you just can’t go wrong with.
With just 5 minutes of prep time and a handful of kitchen essentials, you’ll be able to whip this up anytime- even when those guests turn up unexpectedly.
Ready to go ahead and give it a try? Here’s what you need to know before you get started!
Can I Make Cajun Seasoning From Scratch?
Of course you can!
While our recipe calls for ready-made cajun seasoning, you can totally make it on your own from scratch, and use that.
In fact, it is actually pretty easy to do that, and it is one of those seasoning mixes that you can make in a batch and store for later.
All you’ll need to do is combine 3 tbsp smoked paprika, 2 tbsp of garlic powder, and Kosher salt, plus 1 tbsp each of onion powder, cayenne, thyme, crushed black pepper, crushed white pepper, and oregano.
That’s it!
Why Did My Shrimp Get Chewy?
If you’ve tried your hands at a shrimp recipe before, and they turned out sad, rubbery and chewy, you’re not alone. Shrimp usually becomes chewy when it is overcooked.
So how do you know if your shrimp is cooked perfectly? Well, it is actually pretty easy.
If your shrimp is straight and hasn’t changed color, it is probably undercooked. O-shaped shrimp is possibly overcooked, and unfortunately, irreparably.
Shrimp that is soft, but has a C-shaped structure is just perfectly done.
The best way to make sure you cook your shrimp for just the right amount of time is to follow the recipe, and tweak the cooking time a bit depending on the size of your shrimp.
Remember that shrimp takes very little time and heat to cook, so there’s little to no chance of you undercooking it anyway!
How Can I Make This Shrimp Recipe Healthier?
Shrimp is an excellent source of protein, and is low in calories as well. If you’re looking to make this recipe healthier, there are quite a few ways to do that.
First, you can swap the honey for liquid stevia, It is the best low-carb replacement for honey, and makes this recipe keto-friendly.
Secondly you can also throw in some fresh veggies right in with the shrimp or serve them on the side (think carrots, bell peppers, zucchini, onions, kale, avocado, broccoli or green beans) to increase the fiber, vitamin and mineral content of the dish.
