About the Ingredients for Sloppy Joes
Ground beef – Lean ground beef is best but you can use medium ground beef, in which case you will need to drain the fat from the pan after browning the beef.
Onion – Adds flavour that will be missed if omitted.
Peppers & mushrooms – Yes, I do know that peppers and mushrooms are not part of an authentic Philly cheesesteak, but rather optional toppings. That said they are delicious and really make this sloppy joe mixture irresistible.
Cornstarch – Thickens the sauce.
Broth – I used regular beef broth, but you can use sodium reduced if you prefer, then season to taste.
Ketchup – Gives the sauce a bit of tang.
Worcestershire sauce – Really enhances the flavour of the sauce.
Seasoning – Just salt, pepper, and garlic powder. You can adjust to taste at the end if you like.
Buns – You can use any hamburger buns you like. We love brioche buns, they are so buttery and flavourful.
Butter – If you opt to toast your buns you will want a little butter or margarine if you prefer that.
Cheese – Provolone cheese slices finish these sloppy joes off.
