What Are Dirt Cups?
Dirt cups are a classic no bake dessert that have been around for years! They are simple to make and only require a few ingredients. Typically they are made with Oreo cookies, chocolate pudding, and gummy worms.
They get their name from their appearance, as they look like little cups of dirt. But don’t let that deter you, they are actually really delicious!
Our Easter dirt cups are a fun twist on the original. We make a chocolate cheesecake filling instead of plain old chocolate pudding, and then decorate with Easter candy. Cute and yummy!
Tips for Making the Best Dirt Cups
There are a few things to keep in mind when making dirt cups to ensure that they turn out perfectly every time!
- Use full fat pudding mix for the best flavour, but sugar free or low fat work too!
- Make sure to use cold milk when mixing up the pudding, otherwise it may not thicken properly.
- You can use any flavour of Oreo cookies or pudding that you like.
- If you don’t have a food processor you can crush the cookies with a rolling pin instead.
- Not into cheesecake? Skip the butter, icing sugar, and cream cheese. Just mix the pudding and Cool Whip together (you won’t get 20 servings though.)
- Layer everything into a large casserole dish for a whole garden instead of individual servings.
- Hide the eggs in the “dirt” too for a fun surprise.
More Easter Dirt Cup Garnish Ideas
If you want to get really creative with your Easter dirt cups you can create your own fun spring themed scenes. Try some of these garnish ideas instead of bunnies and eggs!
- Instead of sprinkles use shredded coconut dyed green or candy grass.
- Instead of eggies use Easter M&Ms or jelly beans.
- Decorate the Easter dirt cups with strawberry carrots.
- Use chick peeps instead of bunnies
How to Store Easter Dirt Cups
Any leftover dirt cups can be stored, covered, in the fridge for up to 3 days. The cookie crumbs may begin to get a little soggy though, so I would really recommend consuming the dirt cups on the same day you assemble them.
You can make the filling ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. Assemble the dirt cups when you are ready to serve them.
I do not recommend freezing them as the pudding will get grainy.
About the Equipment Needed for Easter Dirt Cups
Plastic cups – I used these 5.5 oz cups. You can use other sized and then adjust your layers accordingly.
You will also need mixing bowls, and a whisk or stand mixer, as well as a few spoons for layering everything out.
You can also get these super cute garden shovel spoon set that makes these dirt cups even more fun.
About the Ingredients for Easter Dirt Cups
Oreos – A family size package in Canada is 500 g which is 17.6 oz, a family size package in the USA is 19.1 oz. Go for regular Oreos and avoid double stuf Oreos. You can also just use Oreo baking crumbs if you like, you will need about 5 cups.
Butter – Salted butter is best here but you can use unsalted if you prefer. The butter needs to be softened or room temperature.
Cream cheese – Use full fat cream cheese for best results, it also needs to be softened.
Powdered sugar – Icing sugar helps to sweeten and firm up the filling.
Milk – For preparing the pudding. It needs to be cold milk. You can use dairy or non-dairy milk.
Instant pudding – You will need two boxes of 3.4 oz instant chocolate pudding mix. You can also use cooked pudding mix instead if you can’t get the instant pudding. If you go with cooked pudding you will need to let it cool completely.
Cool whip – I used whipped topping, you can use homemade stabilized whipped cream instead if you prefer. In Canada you can use the full 1 Liter container.
Mini chocolate eggs – You can use any candy coated chocolate eggs, I used Hershey’s Eggies. I had a 900g package (about 32 oz) and had half a package left after decorating 20 dirt cups.
Peeps – You will need 20 peep marshmallow bunnies in any colour of your choice. (Canadians, you can find them at Michael’s.)
Sprinkles – I used Sweet Tooth Fairy® Light Green Sprinkle Mix, found at Michael’s.
