The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeny – Retail Value $26.99 USD
A wickedly smart, funny and deeply felt debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of their long depended-upon family inheritance
On a wintry afternoon in New York City, Melody, Beatrice and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, who has just been released from rehab. Leo’s bad behavior before entering rehab, culminating in a car crash while under the influence—a nineteen-year-old waitress beside him—has left the Plumbs’ joint trust fund—“The Nest,” as they’ve taken to calling it—endangered. All four siblings, at very different places in their lives, believe that this money will solve a host of self-inflicted problems and their consequences. And until Leo’s accident, they’d been mere months away from receiving it.
Can Leo get the Plumbs out of this mess, as he’s always been able to do for himself before? Or will the Plumb siblings have to do without the money and the future lives they’ve envisioned? As the siblings grapple with family tensions, old histories, and the significant emotional and financial cost of the accident, Sweeney introduces an unforgettable cast of supporting characters: Leo’s stalwart ex-girlfriend who now thinks that maybe, just maybe, he is capable of change; the waitress whose life was shattered in the accident; the Iraqi war veteran who falls in love with her; and a retired, grieving firefighter with a very big secret.
Tender, funny and deftly written, The Nest explores what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of our lives, and the fraught but unbreakable ties we have with our families.
This one was on my wish-list already and I almost grabbed it in Chapters the other day but something told me not to. (Thank goodness!) I can’t wait to start it!
ZKano Organic Cotton Socks, Olive-striped Aqua Orchid – Retail Value $16.00 USD
I love getting new socks and these ones are super comfy – they are knitted in Fort Payne, Alabama in small batches with certified organic cotton and low impact dyes.
Jasmine Pearl Tea Company, Jasmine Peony Organic Green Tea – Retail Value $12.00 USD
I’m a coffee and tea drinker, tea is my beverage of choice in the afternoon and this tea is a perfect choice for cozy reading time! Hand-picked green tea, carefully blended with intensely fragrant night-blooming jasmine flowers, which are allowed to open and infuse the dry tea with their sweet aroma. The blossoms are removed in the morning, and the process is repeated until the tea reaches the desired level of jasmine flavour. What attention to detail!
Bee Local Honey Sticks, 10 pack – Retail Value $4.00 USD
Honey pairs so well with tea, and Bee Local honey sticks are filled with single origin American honey that is raw and unfiltered. The flavour is unique and great tasting plus they are perfect for stirring into a cup of tea!
Beaded Teapot Tea Infuser – Retail Value $14.98 USD
Seriously? This is the cutest tea infuser ever! From Etsy shop AlmostNecessities, it is hand beaded with silver metal and light blue glass beads and a super cute teapot charm. This is now one of my favourite among my collection of tea accessories.
Grey Ghost Bakery, Lemon Sugar Cookies – Retail Value $5.00 USD
These delicious, melt-in-your-mouth, made from scratch cookies are my ideal treat for relaxing with a book and a hot cup of tea. They are made with all natural ingredients and are hand-topped with pearlized sugar and baked with candied lemon zest. I couldn’t believe how fresh and soft they were out of the package! I definitely did not share.
The value of the box is about $78.97 USD which is pretty great value for the cost of the subscription ($64.95). Yes. It may seem expensive, especially for Canadians with the exchange and the added cost of shipping (which is free for American addresses). While the higher cost might be a barrier for some, I do think it’s still great value for a special treat, especially for those, like me, who enjoy discovering new authors and unique, artisan products.
