I was recently invited, along with a group of other great bloggers, to an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the KFC Test Kitchen where new items are developed and tested before they hit the menu. It was really an eye opening experience where we got to see first hand, and I mean that literally, that KFC does things the hard way.
I was pretty excited to go and get a look at how things are really done at KFC. Growing up my parents didn’t often order out dinner but when they did I would always hope for KFC. There is just something about the juicy, tender chicken and the delicious crunchy skin that just can’t be beat. Now that I am a parent and an adult myself, I still relish ordering out KFC for dinner. It’s such a nice break from doing things the hard way myself and a welcome break from the usual fighting to get my 2 year old to eat her dinner.
During my trip to the KFC Canada Test Kitchen we were given a sneak peak at a brand new flavour making its debut today across Canada, Sweet Chili Crunch! It is actually the first new flavour from KFC Canada in 6 years, and boy oh boy, it sure is worth the wait!
We not only had the opportunity to taste the new flavour but we actually got to get in on some of the action. We experienced some of the hands-on training KFC employees go through to ensure that no matter where you order your chicken you can always expect a consistent and delicious product. This included hand-breading and saucing the chicken ourselves.
Speaking of chicken, KFC really does actually use real chicken, and its literally the same chicken you might buy from your own family at the grocery store. There is no mystery about it, it is just real food.
When it comes to the new Sweet Chili Crunch flavour, the chicken is actually marinated for 12 hours prior to cooking. This ensures a more intense flavour and juicer chicken. It is then double-breaded, fried and then carefully drizzled in Sweet Chili sauce right before it is served to you. This is all done on site at every KFC location across Canada. KFC really does things the hard way. The same way you probably go when preparing food yourself. There is no frozen, pre-packaged food here. Just fresh ingredients, freshly prepared every-time.
We were all amazed at the finished product. We made that!
Don’t worry though, I don’t think any of us will be giving up blogging to go work for KFC anytime soon, we were just way too terribly slow!
Doesn’t it look delicious? It certainly tastes as good as it looks too – a little bit sweet with a touch of heat. I love that it really is just a hint of heat, even my 2 year old would easily be able to handle it. It’s a flavour that is suitable for everyone in your family. The chicken was so juicy and crunchy and full of amazing flavour from the skin right down to the chicken inside thanks to the lengthy marinating process. There is something to be said for doing things the hard way.
