Whether you like it or not, the school year is almost here. Picking up new and magnificent reference titles helps to soften the blow when you realize we are in the midst of the back to school season. DK Canada has put together a Back to School boutique to help you discover some great titles to spark the interest of your kids!
Whether you are looking for answers to questions about science or math or simply looking to discover more about the animal kingdom or the natural world DK Canada has you covered with a full range of reference books. Fully illustrated and expertly researched each of these titles ensures that kids (and adults) will have something fun to share when there’s homework to be done!
My girls aren’t school aged yet but DK does have an awesome complete readiness program with interactive board books, games and playbooks that are perfect for pre-kindergarteners. This series is a great way to ensure that your child has all the skills needed for starting school successfully.
The series was developed in partnership with PBS KIDS and all purchases helps to support PBS KIDS and their development of children’s educational media.
The entire series is very hands on and play oriented with plenty of opportunity to explore skills with creative thinking.
We were ale to check out I’m Ready for School, Number Memory Games and Color Match Games. Also available in the series is 123, Colors and Shapes, Matching and Sorting and Number Skills.
Get Ready for School: I’m Ready for School
Get ready to play, get ready to learn, get ready for school
Help your child get ready for school. This interactive board book helps your little one learn key skills for school time through fun activities set in and around the home. Help your child match shoes in the bedroom, count fruit in the kitchen, spy colours and shapes in the playroom, and sort toys in the garden.
The 45 lift-the-flaps and peep-through cover in I’m Ready for School enable your child to learn key skills and knowledge through play, exploration and conversation. Colourful characters, Bip the Cat, Bop the Elephant, and Boo the Monkey, will inspire and develop a confident, curious and capable child.
This is a fun title for parents to work through with their children. Keira will not sit down and work through the double page spreads properly on her own but with my guidance we are able to work through a couple at a time.
This book is packed with preschool lessons, lift the flaps action and adorable characters which makes this a truly engrossing book for little ones.
It does include a helpful section at the start of the book to help parents get the most out of this book.
These boxes of game cards are designed to support children’s learning development through the early years. The guiding early learning developmental milestones of school readiness inform the content, supporting parents as they get a child ready for school. Each box includes 40 photographic cards and instructions to play a range of two-player games with ideas of games that a child can play to learn key skills. The colorful photographic cards will inspire and develop a confident, curious, and capable child. Parents will love using these games with their kids.
In Number Memory Games, cards show numbers 1-10 arranged in set order with everyday objects and number words to help toddlers practice adding and taking away up to 10, sharing, and grouping. The easy-to-understand visual approach focuses on real-life problem-solving activities, such as going shopping and playing sports.
Color Match Games features balloons, clothes, household objects, and more. The book includes instructions for games with the cards, practicing key skills of recognizing colors, matching colors, becoming familiar with color words, and matching color sequences. Also included are memory and timed challenges, and further color activities.
These games are a lot of fun and are really helpful for building on skills that pre-kindergartners likely already have and reinforcing that knowledge.
