Tell Them What A Bully Is

Before you can teach your how to deal with a bully, you need to help them understand what a bully is.

The definition of bullying is continual actions or words that cause harm to others.

Make sure your preschooler knows the difference between a bully who is trying to hurt them and a friend who might not be having a good day. This is a very important distinction to make.

Discuss Reasons Why Kids Act Like Bullies

Once your preschooler knows what a bully is, you can help them understand why some kids act like bullies.

When having this discussion, you will want to make it age appropriate. Let your preschooler know that the bully might not know how to act nice or that they might be sad.

By understanding the reason behind bullying, your child will start to develop compassion for others, while understanding that bullying isn’t the right way to deal with things.

Make A Plan of Action

After discussing what bullies are and why they are mean to other kids, you can help your preschooler create a plan of action if they are ever bullied at school.

Give them a few strategies that will help them get away from the bully. Great suggestions include having your preschooler walk away. If the bully follows them, they can then go to a teacher or a trusted adult.

After talking about the plan of action, you can role-play a bully situation and have your child practice following these steps.

It’s important to teach your preschooler how to deal with a bully in the correct way so they don’t make the problem worse or get themselves in trouble.

Hopefully your preschooler never has to deal with a bully, but by preparing them, you’ll give them the opportunity to respond to the situation in an appropriate way.
