I was sent the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier One to check out, and just in time for the warmer weather to arrive! This of course means plenty of outings for my family after hiding away a bit from the cold weather.
One thing I have learned about travelling with a baby and a toddler is that strollers are not always your friend. Whether I am out for a stroll downtown, or travelling as a family to a distant destination a baby carrier makes activities easy and hands-free so I can enjoy all the same outdoor activities I always have without the limitation that a stroller introduces.
Since I have two little ones I typically have to carry one and either push the other in the stroller or have her walk with a backpack harness. Needless to say, I do rely on my baby carriers quite a bit both inside and outside my home making comfort, durability and ease of use quite important.
The BabyBjörn Baby Carrier One is the first BabyBjörn Carrier I have ever used so I wasn’t sure what to expect as far as ease of use, comfort and safety. That said, BabyBjörn has been in the baby carrier business since the 1970s so I was pretty sure of the quality of the product. Incredible!
The BabyBjörn Baby Carrier One does come in a smart looking black design but it is also available in a variety of other colour combinations. Personally I quite like the black.
What really stands out for me about the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier One is that it offers 4 different carrying positions that allow you to comfortably carry your child from birth to toddler.
The carry position for newborns allows ou to carry your newborn higher up on your chest which allows you to safely monitor their breathing. This is done quite simply by way of a zipper inside the carrier. There is also an inward-facing position, an outward-facing position and a back carrying position for toddlers.
You also have the choice between normal and wide leg positions when front facing inwards. Choosing between the normal and wide leg position is done simply by opening or closing the leg position zippers.
You will also notice that the Baby Carrier one also features a wide waist belt and padded shoulder straps which helps to distribute weight and prevent back and shoulder strain. Believe me, if you plan on walking any kind of distance, this kind of ergonomic design is so very important.
Right out of the box I could see that the carrier is a high quality product that has been carefully manufactured with every detail thought of from stitching to materials. It has been solidly constructed and seems quite durable. There are instructions included in booklet form, as well as in the form of a handy tag attached to the inside of the carrier. That said, it such an intuitive carrier you won’t need to spend too much time on the instructions.
It is incredibly easy to put on too. My other carriers all involve some tricky reaching around your back to secure the shoulder straps but the upper body staps on the Baby Carrier One are sewn together meaning you simple pull it on over your head and attach the waist buckle. It’s so easy that my husband was able to do it on his own and he doesn’t typically do the baby wearing. The only tricky part is figuring out how all the buckles unclip as they aren’t designed in the typical fashion.
Ava loves to be carried around or held. Where Keira has always been more independent, Ava has always been clingy. In the play room she spends as much time sitting on my lap quietly playing with a small toy as she does exploring on the ground with her sister. This often can mean that I do need to have Ava in the carrier around the house to keep her happy and quiet. This also means that it is important the carrier is as comfortable for her as it is for me.
The first test of that was the fact that she is happy being in the the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier One for any length of time. She just does not complain about being in it. She is comfortable and she is close to me.
You can also see from how she fits in the carrier that it easily fits around her securely with padding in just the right places.
I also like that the materials are designed and tested with babies in mind. It is safe and gentle against baby’s skin and even safe enough for them to chew or suck on which is important with Ava as she sticks everything in her mouth. She is definitely still in the oral fixation stage!
A truly unique feature of the Baby Carrier One is the ability to single-handedly and safely get your child into the back carrying position. My other carriers involve some tricky manoeuvring, balancing and a pinch of hoping and praying you don’t drop your child while getting them into the back carrying position alone. Definitely not the case here at all. You can simply move the baby carrier from front to back while your child sits in the baby carrier. This is a truly clever innovation that will be priceless when I find myself in need of getting Ava onto my back with no help. Something I always struggled to do with Keira.
My one gripe with this carrier is the lack of pockets or even just a purse holder. This means I have to either fuss around with my purse or carry the essentials in my pant pockets when out and about.
Our family loves the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier One as it keeps us all happy. I get to be mobile and enjoy all the outdoor activities I normally do like walking and taking in tourist attractions while travelling and Ava gets to take everything in around her from the comfort and closeness of the baby carrier. If you are looking for a carrier that will allow many different positions and take you from birth to toddler, I can definitely recommend this BabyBjörn Baby Carrier One as a great choice.
