My family loves real ice cream for a cool summer treat and avoid “Frozen Desserts”. Even still, when I read some of the ingredients on the ice cream containers I don’t feel like saying “Yum!”
“FRESH CREAM, MODIFIED MILK INGREDIENTS, SUGAR, GLUCOSE, PURE GROUND VANILLA BEANS, NATURAL FLAVOUR, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, CELLULOSE GUM, GUAR GUM, CARRAGEENAN, POLYSORBATE 80.”
Sounds delish right? Probably not so much.
I was delighted for the opportunity to review a Hamilton Beach Ice Cream Maker so I could provide my family with real ice cream from fresh yummy sounding ingredients all summer long.

The Hamilton Beach 1½ Quart Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Maker is such a gorgeous colour, not to mention easy to use and clean up!
To get started you need to get the freezer bowl in the freezer so it can work its magic. It says up to 24 hours but it took 48 hours in my freezer (we only have the freezer compartment of the fridge and not a dedicated freezer which I suspect makes a difference.
Once the bowl is frozen you can throw in your chilled ice cream mixture and after 20-40 minutes of churning you will have some fresh homemade ice cream! You definitely need to make sure that the bowl is completely frozen or you will not get a good freeze. I made this mistake on my first go and ended up with cold melted ice cream. Once I allowed the bowl to completely freeze and started over again the ice cream was perfect.
The end result is an ice cream with the texture of soft-serve when eaten right after being churned. You do need to remove the ice cream and transfer to a freezer safe container and I found that after this was done that the ice cream had more of a store bought consistency.
Since Keira is afraid of loud noises (like lawn mowers, the food processors, planes flying overhead, pots and pans being banged around etc…) I was a little worried that it would run loud which would severely limit its use. I was happy to find though that the motor is relatively quiet, and she doesn’t even notice it.
The first flavour I made was Peaches and Cream Ice cream, the recipe I made I found within the instruction booklet which includes several yummy looking recipes. Get this… the recipe doesn’t call for any diglycerides!
The ingredients are pure and fresh… peaches, sugar, whipping cream, milk and vanilla. Now that makes me think “yum”!
I can’t wait to try other flavours, and we are looking forward to homemade ice cream all summer long.

I love my ice-cream, white chocolate being my favourite and unfortunately seldom found. With this precious little machine it wouldn't be a problem, I'd just make my own all the time ;-)
