5 Incredible Things You Can Do With Intel® RealSense™ Technology

Measure_FB

With the rapid changes in technology over the last decade it has started to feel like we live in the future and now even more so with the advent of Intel® RealSense™ Technology in commercially available products.  Imagine being able to control your device with natural hand movements or being able to get life-sized measurements from a photo.  With Intel® RealSense™ Technology you don’t have to imagine, you can just do it!

So how does it work?

Devices sporting the Intel® RealSense™ 3D camera have three lenses: a conventional camera, an infrared camera, and an infrared laser projector.  The lenses work together to allow the device to “sense” depth by detecting the infrared light bouncing off objects in front of it.  The device then takes the visual data and in combination with innovative motion-tracking software is able to create a touch-free interface that responds to hand, arm, and head motions as well as facial expressions. So what can you do with the Intel® RealSense™ Technology found in the latest and greatest devices out there?  Read on to find out!

1)   Control Your Device With Natural Gestures

Imagine being able to interact with your computer as you would with people through facial expressions and natural gestures?  Intel® RealSense™ 3D camera has made this a reality as it sees and processes more like we do, enabling it to respond to natural movement in three dimensions.  Forget your mouse and touchscreens, controlling your device can be as simple as a wave!  This is an especially exciting feature for gamers as it will allow them to play using head, hand and finger movements to play.

2) 3D Scanning at Home

Since Intel® RealSense™ technology can sense depth. 3D scanning is now a reality right from your device, so you can scan and objects —even your own face – and create a digital 3D version.  This opens up the possibility of printing a version of it with the use of a 3D printer.

3) Green Screen without the Screen

Ever setup a video chat meeting only to realise last minute that your laundry couch is in full view?  No problem with devices sporting an Intel® RealSense™ 3D camera as it is able to remove your chat background altogether, and even allows you to swap in a replacement and share content as if participants were in the same room!

4) Point. Shoot Measure.

The feature I personally find pretty awesome is the ability to take measurements with the camera!  You can just snap a picture on your device and take measurements right on the screen thanks to Intel® RealSense™ snapshot which puts innovative and interactive photo technology right in your device that allows it to see and store the real-world dimensions of the things in your photos.  I can see several great real world applications for this technology.  Most notably determining whether or not a new piece of furniture will fit in a specific space.

5) Change Focus After You Shoot

Another pretty useful application of Intel® RealSense™ snapshot is the ability to change focus after you take the photo.  This means you can change which object or person is in focus which is a revolutionary feature for photographers.  This is possible because the images are actually captures in layers, so with a touch of a finger you can focus on something else.

I didn't know much about realsense tech before this post and it was really interesting. I'd love to have a 3D home scanner.
