I was able to check out a selection of truly stunning books from the boutique; Butterfly, Rainforest and Reef.

This book consists of some of the most stunning photos I have ever seen. I love that the book doesn’t limit itself to the adult butterfly though, and gives us stunning gorgeous photographs of the caterpillar phase as well as egg. I could literally spend hours flipping through this book over and over taking in the photographs.
The book itself is categorized rather smartly. Instead of of by species it is grouped by development, lifecycle, and survival methods. The adjoining text itself is quite interesting to read, but I can bet you will want this book just for the photo’s alone.
Although they cover only one percent of the Earth’s surface, reefs are home to more than 25 percent of all marine fish species. They are the largest living structures on the planet, created over millennia by countless tiny organisms. Reef is your opportunity to discover some of the most incredible wildlife habitats on the planet.
Coral reefs are often called “the rainforests of the sea” because of the quantity and diversity of life they support, and because they are highly sensitive and threatened ecosystems. Building on the success of DK’s Rainforest, this unique pictorial celebration of the world’s reefs progresses through an ecological chain that goes from algae, sponges, and mollusks to the thousands of fishes that make their homes there. This is another book filled with beautiful page-to-page vibrant photographs. I’ve never scuba dived before but I feel like this book allows me to see the view I’ve been missing out on! The most stand-out photo for me is the one of the Pygmy Sea Horse. The Sea Horse itself is about the size of a thumbnail but the clarity and detail of the macro photo is awe inspiring. It is the kind of photo I could literally stare at for hours, and what I love about this book is that it is filled with such photos.
Follow the story and live the experience of one man’s photographic journey through the rainforests of the world. 16+ years in the making, packed with spectacular photographs from Thomas Marent, a self-taught photographer who has dedicated half his life to capturing images of rainforest life, and including captions that present the stories behind the photographs, Rainforest is an extraordinary photographic biography of our planet’s most beautiful yet fragile environment.
Last but not least is Rainforest, which I think is my most favourite of the three. It too is just filled, cover to cover with beautiful photography. From panoramic views to close ups of birds and mammals and even some shots of amazing plants and insects. If nothing else, this book highlights the importance of the worlds rainforests and why they need to be saved. The biodiversity is truly astounding.
I would recommend all three books to nature lovers and photography buffs. Just a word of warning though: you will spend hours flipping through them!

I’ve had my eye on the Smithsonian Natural History book quite awhile. Everything looks so vibrant and beautiful from the Rainforest book though, it’s definitely my top choice.

Compost would be my choice. I’ve noticed that it is rarely done in this area, compost is collected for sure but not usually made at home. I used to do make my own (wonderful for plants) and I’d be interested to read how it’s done here in such a cold climate.

The Birds of Canada, also Eastern Canada. I love birds, I feed them and have a bird bath outside in the warm spring time. I also enjoyed your collection for gardening. I guess it shows that I just love being outside.
