Natural Ways to Stay Safe in the Summer Sun

Natural Ways to Stay Safe in the Summer Sun

After weeks of cool and rainy weather, it’s a relief to finally feel the summer sun. Although there’s nothing wrong with soaking up some rays, you do need to take preventative steps to help keep yourself safe in the heat. Staying in the sun too long can lead to sunburn, heat sickness, and more, which is definitely not how you want to end your fun day. If you’re planning to spend some time outside this summer, you’ll need these natural ways to keep your family safe in the summer sun.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen!

Of course, it is always important to slather on sunscreen – even on cloudy summer days to protect your skin from UV rays.  Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 and remember to reapply it consistently and especially if you’ve been in the water – even with waterproof sunscreens.  These tips are meant to be used in conjunction with conventional sun safety recommendations and it is important that you never skip on this step.  If you are not comfortable with using conventional sunscreen brands on your yourself or your children, there are plenty of natural products available on the market rated with an SPF of 30+.

Dress Appropriately

Remember to dress appropriately for the heat. Wear cool clothes that won’t cause you to overheat and bring protective clothing that can shade you from the sun, such as a hat or sunglasses. If you know that your shoulders are especially susceptible to sunburn, then bring a light wrap to throw over your shoulders when you feel them starting to get warm. Wearing the right clothing will help keep you safe in the sun.

Stay in the Shade

In addition to sunscreen, a great way to stay safe in the summer sun is to take advantage of the shade. If you’ve been in the sun too long or feel as if you’re getting too warm, don’t be afraid to move over to the shade. This is especially important when the sun is at its strongest in the middle of the day. Once you’ve cooled off, you’re ready for more fun in the sun.  You can even carry an umbrella to create some portable shade.

Do not Fall for the Base Tan Myth

A Base tan does not protect you from the damage that UV rays cause.  It only masks the harmful effects, causes its own damage to your skin and will not prevent further damage that could potentially cause everything from wrinkles to cancer.

Plan Around the Sun

Spend the most time outdoors in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky.  Check the UV index to help you plan your outdoor activities in ways that limit harmful sun exposure.

Those are great tips -- we always used those growing up too! We didn't realize back then that a base tan was a myth, but I burned too easily to get a base tan so it was a moot point. :)

These are all great tips, everyone needs to take caution anymore, I find you burn much easier and faster nowadays and plus you don't want to pay for it when you are older!!
