My mom is not shy when it comes to giving out life advice.  I couldn’t even begin to list them all for you.  A lot of it stuck despite some of my teenage angst and in the end I think my mom did a good job in raising me.

The single piece of life advice though that has always stuck with me, and I’ve talked about it before,  is to give to others and it will come back to you tenfold.  I know this is something her own mother would often tell her and this single piece of advice clearly shaped my own mothers life.  It’s about giving to those in need, it’s about treating others the way you would want to be treated and it’s about being mindful of Karma.  You reap what you sow.

give to other and it will come back to you tenfold

What I love about this advice is that it is a reminder to give what you can and do your best to be good to others.  I love that when my mom says it that it does not mean that if you give a beggar $5 you will somehow come into $50.  No, it’s about the good you freely and willingly put into the world coming back to you in some perhaps unexpected form.

My mom spends a lot of her time helping other people and volunteering at the very same Church 3 generations of our family have been baptized into now.  As a matter of fact my mom keeps so busy helping others it can be hard to track her down!

We all have people in our lives who have inspired us with great life advice, whether that be a parent, a grandparent, a friend, a neighbour or a teacher.  We are all who we are today because of these people so why not pay it forward with kindness during this Christmas season.

Manulife would love to see you hop on twitter and Facebook to send a shout-out to the people in your life that you are most grateful for!  Let’s start a movement of kindness and appreciation for others by sharing and tagging those you are thankful for.  Hey, you might even see it come back to you tenfold.

  1. Our family has always volunteered, helped done whatever they possibly can. That is one saying that my grandmother use to say

  2. My mother was always kind and courteous. She treated every person with great respect. It really made an impression on me when she took in a homeless person and gave him a really good meal, all the while being very courteous to him.
She would not have treated the Queen any better.
She never preached kindness or courtesy, except to never allow us to call our elders by their first names, but her actions spoke louder than any words.
She never gossiped which I found out later was a rare gift.

  3. My mother always tried to teach us that showing kindness and respect was something you SHOULD do, not something you HAD to do. I try to teach my son that now.

  4. I love volunteering our time and energy to help others and hope my boys learn by example. It’s not about getting something in return, a smile or a nod of appreciation is more than enough for me.

  5. What a lovely post. When our children were all still at home, we could pick a family in need, each year at Christmas time. We would take the kids shopping and let them help pick out gifts. We would also purchase all the items needed for a holiday meal – like a ham, bags of potatoes, cans of green beans, and we would always include candy – lots of candy. We would spend one evening wrapping all the gifts, and then place them all in a big box that would then be wrapped with great care. We would all pile into the van ( or vans, as our family grew). We would drive the the family’s home and park a couple of houses down. The two oldest boys would quietly carry the box to the front door, rind the bell and run like crazy. Oh, how delighted our kids were when they would see the look of surprise when the recipients opened their door. Over the years, I don’t think that a single one of our kids “spilled the beans” and told of our good deeds!

  6. I believe that God blesses those who bless others. I appreciate all the positive, loving people in my life.

  7. This is such a great Twitter party to have, thank you for the info. I won’t be able to attend this time, but so happy that Twitter is being used for some good!
