This fall, The Healthy Shopper is back with some more great organic and natural products. Co-founders Randy Boyer and Andrea Donsky have been busy continuing their mission to make healthy shopping easier. This season’s picks include organic juice boxes, organic ketchup and mustard, gluten-free baking and cake mixes, and many delectable flavours of the creamiest Greek style yogurt. For personal care, The Healthy Shopper introduces the many benefits of wild oil of oregano as well as a homeopathic cold and cough remedy for your little ones.
Here are this season’s choices from The Healthy Shoppers Picks for Fall 2013.
Pamela’s – Delicious, gluten free foods with a full line of baking mixes, cookies and snack bars. The products found in the 2013 Fall picks include Pancake Mix, Artisan Flour Blend and Chocolate Cake Mix. While nobody in my household requires a gluten-free diet, we do have extended family and friends with wheat allergies and Celiac disease. Thanks to Pamela’s line of mixes I won’t be scrambling for ideas to serve them when they come over for a visit! I was surprised when trying these mixes out over how they did not taste gluten-free. I’ve tried other gluten-free mixes before for cupcakes and they always ended up with a dry texture and strange taste. Both the cake mix and the pancake mix ended in delicious, moist, flavourful treats.
Hyland’s – Kids cough’ n cold homeopathic remedies. We’ve actually been using Hyland’s for just over a year now, both the infant formula for Keira as well as the adult formula for myself. I normally have a fairly low blood pressure and I find typical cold medication at the recommended doses make me feel dizzy and a bit off. Hylands provides the quick and lasting relief I need when suffering from cold without the side effects I feel when taking other cold medications. Plus it tastes like honey. For real. Hyland’s Homeopathic Cold ‘n Cough for Kids contains all natural active ingredients that soothe sore throats, loosens congestion and eases sneezing without stimulant side effects. Safe for children 2–12 years old, it’s sugar and dye free and contains no Aspirin, Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Pseudoephedrine or Dextromethorphan. We haven’t used the Kid’s formula yet, but if its anything like the infant formula we have been giving Keira, it is a winner as well! She loves the taste of it so there is never any fighting and more importantly, it is effective.
Kiju – 100% organic juice boxes. Included in the picks are Pomegranate Cherry and Mango Orange flavours – they are made of 100% organic fruit blends and have no additional sugar added. I really loved both flavours and was on the look out during my last shopping trip as I was interested in the cost difference. Honestly at $2.99 for a box of four, they are completely in line price-wise with the other sugar filled juice boxes. These make for a delicious, healthier option to pack for lunches.
Simply Natural – Certified organic ketchup and mustards. These condiments are not only free of High-fructose corn syrup but are also Vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free. The ingredients are simple and contain no preservatives. For example, Organic Ketchup is made of the following ingredients: Organic tomato puree, organic sugar, organic white vinegar, salt, organic onion powder and organic spices. Nothing in there you can’t pronounce!
North American Herb and Spice – High quality oregano oil products. Oreganol P73 is the true oil of wild oregano, a blend of the oils from edible species of wild oregano. Oreganol P73 is the original mountain spice oregano oil, which has been used for thousands of years for its powerful health benefits. I actually hadn’t heard of Oregano oil before, but did some research and it seems there are a lot of health benefits to be had.
Olympic Dairy – Krema, 100% natural greek style yogurts. Certified-organic and 100% natural yogurt from a Canadian owned and operated company. I like knowing that these yogurts are natural and organic certified and free of synthetic preservatives and gelatins. I especially loved to use the Plain yogurt to incorporate into the homemade food I used to make for Keira when she was still mostly on purees as I felt I could trust the ingredients.
