A Gift For Sophie Book & Music CD Review & Giveaway

A poetic story by Gilles Vigneault about friendship and old age that takes place in a seaside setting and depicts a sense of continuity, the importance of remembering and the happiness a gift can bring. Nine songs accompany the narration of this touching story about two friends, Sophie and Emilio, and the Old Man Tom who teaches them how to see the world through their hearts.  In addition to the narrated story, the CD offers nine heartwarming songs for the whole family.

The story and songs were all written by renowned Québécois folksinger and Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Gilles Vigneault with illustrations by four-time Governor General’s Award Winner Stéphane Jorisch. A Gift For Sophie was previously published in French under the title “Un Cadeau Pour Sophie”.   The new English version, from The Secret Mountain, features Martha Wainwright singing as the main character on three songs, along with other performances by artists such as French Canadian singer-songwriter Thomas Hellman.

This is a tender coming of age tale of friendship and the loss of a loved one geared towards children ages 5 to 7.  The difficult topic of death and loss is dealt with in simplicity by Vigneault, so that even the youngest readers can understand.   “It’s all in the nature of things!” as Old Man Tom would often say. 

This story engages readers in the friendship between Sophie and Emilio, a boy her own age, and their relationship with Old Man Tom.  This title offers colourful and imaginative illustrations as well as a CD full of fun songs parents can enjoy along with their kids.
