 child of a hidden sea

One minute, twenty-four-year-old Sophie Hansa is in a San Francisco alley trying to save the life of the aunt she has never known. The next, she finds herself flung into the warm and salty waters of an unfamiliar world. Glowing moths fall to the waves around her, and the sleek bodies of unseen fish glide against her submerged ankles. The world is Stormwrack, a series of island nations with a variety of cultures and economies—and a language different from any Sophie has heard. Sophie doesn’t know it yet, but she has just stepped into the middle of a political firestorm, and a conspiracy that could destroy a world she has just discovered…her world, where everyone seems to know who she is, and where she is forbidden to stay.

But Sophie is stubborn, and smart, and refuses to be cast adrift by people who don’t know her and yet wish her gone. With the help of a sister she has never known, and a ship captain who would rather she had never arrived, she must navigate the shoals of the highly charged politics of Stormwrack, and win the right to decide for herself whether she stays in this wondrous world…or is doomed to exile, in Child of a Hidden Sea by A.M. Dellamonica.

I love reading.  I will read pretty much anything from trashy romance books to westerns to Greek philosophy.  My favourite among all others genres though is fantasy.  The first Fantasy novels I read were from the Dragonlance series in middle school and they really turned me into a bookworm.  Soon I was reading anything and everything I could get my hands on.  Since having my girls though I have to admit that it is much harder to make myself set aside the time to read.

This book forced me to set aside the time.  It’s just that good!

The tone of the book is light which is a bit different from the fantasy stories I tend to read.  I think that makes it more accessible to readers who perhaps don’t make it a habit to read books of the fantasy genre.

Our heroine, Sophie Hansa, is curious with a strong thirst for knowledge, easily rolls with the punches and above all else has a good heart.  She is also our narrator and of course ends up being a little more fleshed out than the other characters.

The story takes place on Stormwrack which is full of political and magical intrigue with very different social norms.  I think what I love most about fantasy novels are learning about the world the characters live in and since this is a world accessible via portal and Sophie is not a native we get to explore right along with her.

I cannot wait to read the next book in the series when it becomes available.  I just have to know what happens with the main characters, and especially Sophie!
