First off, Mom, (My mom), please stop reading this. This is full of spoilers!
Mother’s Day is the perfect day to express your gratitude a little more than usual towards your Mother or Mother figure. She took the time and put in the effort to care for you and help you thorugh all life’s challenges and now it is time to really stop and thank her.
Chocolate, flowers and cards are typical of Mothers day but why not gift her a book from DK Canada this year? The books in the Mother’s Day Boutique are sure to put a smile on her face and are all specially priced for a limited time at 30% off. Choose books from home and garden to food and travel. There is a wealth of possibilities that any Mom would enjoy!
This year I got my mom a selection of titles from DK Canada including Crochet and Smithsonian Fashion.
Tracing the evolution of fashion — from the early draped fabrics of ancient times to the catwalk couture of today — Fashion: The Definitive History of Costume and Style is a stunningly illustrated guide to more than three thousand years of shifting trends and innovative developments in the world of clothing.
Containing everything you need to know about changing fashion and style — from ancient Egyptian dress to Space Age Fashion and Grunge — and information on icons like Marie Antoinette, Clara Bow, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Alexander McQueen, Fashion catalogs the history of what people wear, revealing how Western fashion has been influenced by design from around the world and celebrating costume and haute couture.
Fashion will captivate anyone interested in style — whether it’s the fashion-mad teen in Tokyo, the wannabe designer in college, or the fashionista intrigued by the violent origins of the stiletto and the birth of bling.
Fashion is a gorgeous visual representation of the history of fashion, costume and style over the last three thousand years. This is a title that will peak the interest of just about any mom, even those who aren’t very fashion oriented. It is a rather interesting way to look at history, and that angle alone makes it relevant to many beyond those interested purely in the fashion aspect.
This book features original fashion plates, detail from historical artworks, archival images and drool-worthy photography.. It tells the story of how each generation embraces and re-invents fashion to suit their era.
There are several features on famous trendsetters and influencers, such as Coco Chanel, Twiggy and Alexander McQueen.
The book covers both men and womens fashion but I found it largely focused on womens fashion. Also note that this is almost completely a look at Western Fashion with an emphasis on the last two centuries.
Showcasing the most important fashions through the ages, Fashion: The Definitive History of Costume and Style is guaranteed to add style to any bookshelf.
Crochet: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide features a mix of classic and modern crochet projects, including things to wear, items for the home, decorative pieces, and cute gifts.
Packed with 101 inspirational projects for crocheters of all levels of skill, Crochet: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide walks readers through the basic techniques — with useful practice projects — before embarking on more adventurous crochet patterns.
Crochet: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide uses step-by-step techniques and photography to make crocheting as easy as can be.

So… I don’t know the first thing about crochet – but my mom and my sister do. I did flip through the book but did not try any of the techniques myself. I did find that the guide is as visually appealing as all DK books are.
Included in this book is a guide to different types of yarn and hooks, and the basics of crochet. It then goes into various crochet techniques, and care. Most of the book though is full of beautiful looking patterns. It includes more than 50 patterns! This seems like the perfect book for both beginners and more adept crocheters (because of the large variety of patterns.)
Take a look through DK’s Mother’s Day Boutique, you are sure to find a wonderful gift for the Mother figure in your life!

My Mom is an original, love her dearly and see her as much as I can. Mom does not have a creative bone in her, so she would not be interested in this book. I however would love it

I hope your mom didn't read this - I'd be very tempted if it was me I must admit :-) I did use to crochet too but that is a very long time ago, I also knitted for a good few years now I only do cross-stitch Advents calendars for my grandchildren - there are 7 of them and I've not caught up yet - at the rate my 7 children are having children of their own it might be fruitless endeavour :-).
