Flora and the Penguin

Having mastered ballet in Flora and the Flamingo , Flora takes to the ice and forms an unexpected friendship with a penguin. Twirling, leaping, spinning, and gliding, on skates and flippers, the duo mirror each other’s graceful dance above and below the ice. But when Flora gives the penguin the cold shoulder, the pair must figure out a way to work together for uplifting results. Artist Molly Idle creates an innovative, wordless picture book with clever flaps that reveal Flora and the penguin coming together, spiraling apart, and coming back together as only true friends do. (Ages 8+ )

I have not read Flora and the Flamingo so I do not have anything to compare this title to.  I can say that it is a beautiful and wordless picture book with all sorts of elements to lift and flip as Flora and her new friend the Penguin skate across the ice.  The flaps are cleverly placed to create movement and with a little imagination this book is brought to life.

I have never seen a book like this before and at first I was confused by the lack of words but by the end I was won over by its beauty.  I was also surprised by how clear the story was just by the illustrations alone, words would have probably diminished the story somehow.

Young readers will enjoy the tactile experience offered by the flaps but they will love using their imagination even more to tell the story themselves.
