7 Tips for a Successful Diaper Change #LittleMoversPlus

 

Keira, my 3 year old, has been potty trained for over a year now and while I enjoy not having to struggle through diaper changes with her, I do miss the fun and one on one time.  With an 18 month old (Ava) still in diapers though, I am still in the thick of the diaper changing stage. 

Ava has been busy over the last few months learning how to walk, climb stairs and… well everything else too.  She can get up on the couches, chairs and literally everything else she puts her mind to get up on. 

She is such a little busy body but we both enjoy our one on one time when it comes to diaper changes.  We are at the point now where she can tell me when she wants her diaper change and even differentiates between pee and poo.  Baby’s are so very clever, aren’t they?

If you are a new parents or struggling through diaper changes you will want to check out these tips to help you achieve a successful, (and maybe even fun,) diaper change.

7 Tips for a Successful Diaper Change

1) Choose the right diaper

2) Pick a Good Location

Some families do well with a change pad on the bed for diaper changes, however I always found having a dedicated change table to be the easiest.  If you have a large counter in your bathroom that may be a great spot to choose as well.  You will obviously want to skip the kitchen counter or any other surface you eat off of.  Make sure the area is safe but still be sure to keep one hand on your baby and at the very least stay with your baby at all times while they are on the changing mat.

3) Be Prepared

Before you start the diaper change make sure you have everything you need including a clean diaper, wipes, and ointment.  This is where a change table comes in handy as it should already be stocked with everything you need for the change.  You will also want to have a fresh pair of clothes at the ready in case of a sneaky blow-out.

4)  Stock Up

Babies go through a lot of diapers, while the amount eases up as they go it’s still a good idea to stock up.  Buying in bulk will really save you money and I definitely recommend getting the biggest box you can.

5) Protect against Diaper Rash

Diaper rash occurs when your baby’s skin is irritated, usually by wetness.  To protect their skin you will want to change their diaper often.  Clean and properly dry off their private area (going front to back to prevent infections if your baby is a girl) and apply barrier cream before putting on the new diaper.  Do not use talcum powder as there is a possibility of baby accidentally inhaling some which can lead to chest complications, it can also cause friction which will just lead to more irritation.

6) Make Diaper Changes Fun

Distraction is key to making diaper changes a less frustrating experience for both baby and parents.  Every baby is different but toys or small board books go a long way towards distracting baby’s old enough to grasp.  Every baby from newborn to toddler enjoy being sung to, and they honestly don’t care how well you sing!  The alphabet is a good one that kids love, and as a bonus they will know their letters pretty early on.

7) Clean up Properly

After the diaper change it is important to prevent the spread of germs.  Start by rolling up the used diaper and using the tabs to close it up like a ball.  Dispose of it immediately into a bin – whether its just your washroom bin or a diaper disposal system.  Always wash both yours and your baby’s hands.  Baby’s have a tendency to grab for their privates so it is important you get their little hands clean before they get put into their little mouths.   

You should also remember to clean and disinfect the changing area often, including washing down your changing pad.
