Tips for Making the BEST Lucky Charms Treats
- Make sure you use a large pot so that you can combine the cereal directly into the melted marshmallows.
- Heat the pot on a low and resist the urge to turn it up for the softest treats.
- Use fresh marshmallows and toss any old ones you have around, it will affect the texture.
- Also make sure your cereal is fresh. Stale cereal will only make stale tasting treats.
- Reserve extra marshmallow treats to press into the treats after pressing into the pan.
- Don’t press the treats too hard into the pan, they will become more dense than desirable.
- If the mixture is sticking to your hands, wet your hands with water first.
- Cool completely before cutting into squares.
Variations on Lucky Charms Treats
- Add sprinkles – Sprinkling the treats over with rainbow or green nonpariels add a fun look and tasty crunch.
- Dip in white chocolate. Once set, dip individual treats in melted white chocolate or green candy melts.
- Lucky charms rice krispie treats. These are crunchy with some gooeyness, instead of that soft gooeyness you get from rice krispies treats. Get the best of both world’s by using the marshmallows from lucky charms mixed into rice krispies.
Equipment Needed to Make Lucky Charms Treats
- Baking Dish – I’d recommend using a square baking dish with straight sides if possible to make the most uniform treats with the neatest edges. However, this is purely aesthetic – it’ll all taste the same! For treats that aren’t as thick, make them in a 9 x 13 baking dish.
- Wax or Parchment Paper to line the pan if you prefer not to go with greasing it with butter.
- Large pot
- Rubber or silicone spatula
How to Store Lucky Charms Treats
These lucky charms treats are best enjoyed the day they’re made, and even better within the first few hours in my opinion! They will last up to 2-3 days if kept in an airtight container at room temperature.
Make sure the container is airtight because the exposure to air will cause them to harden, losing their gooey softness!
Alternately they can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 6 days, but they won’t be as gooey when chilled.
Can you Freeze Cereal Treats?
Cereal treats store well for up to 2 months in the freezer.
Wrap individual squares tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, and then place them in a freezer bag.
When you’re ready to enjoy your frozen treats, let them thaw at room temperature for about 20 minutes.
You can also reheat them in the microwave for 30-45 seconds.
About the Ingredients for Lucky Charms Treats
Butter – I prefer salted butter when making cereal treat squares, the salt helps to balance out the sweetness. If you use unsalted butter you may want to add about a half teaspoon of salt to the butter and marshmallow mixture.
Marshmallows – Mini marshmallows melt better but you can use full sized marshmallows instead if that is all you can get your hands on.
Vanilla – Adds a little depth of flavour to the marshmallow mixture.
Cereal – I used Lucky Charms cereal, but you can substitute with off-brand copy cats if you like. If you choose to use a different cereal you may need to adjust the amount of cereal added.
