How to Melt Marshmallows in the Microwave

To melt the marshmallows in the microwave instead of the stove: add the marshmallows, butter and salt to a large microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave for 1 and a half minutes, and then stir with a rubber spatula until smooth. Microwave for in additional 15 second increments if needed.

Once smooth, add the Rice Krispies to the melted mix and continue with the instructions at Step 5.

How to Crush Oreos

  • Break the Oreo pieces into a variety of sizes. How big you want to make them is up to you, but I would recommend breaking the majority of them into quarters of an Oreo or smaller.
  • I like pretty substantial pieces of cookies in the rice krispie treats, so coarsely chopped suits me better.
  • A handful of Oreo halves is a fun touch, especially to reserve for the tops of the Rice Krispie treats.
  • I found a potato masher to be the perfect tool for breaking the Oreos into pieces, but you can also add them to a zip-top bag and roll over them with a rolling pin or crush them using the bottom of a glass.
  • You want to use a tool that will break them into chunk-sized pieces, and not turn them into a fine sand-like texture, so avoid the food processor.
  • You should have about two cups of broken Oreo pieces.

How to Line a Baking Dish for Rice Krispie Treats

  • You can use parchment or wax paper to line the baking dish so the treats are easy to remove once set.
  • Overhang refers to the extra length of wax paper that hangs over the sides of the baking dish. The overhang will help you lift the Rice Krispie treats out of the baking dish.
  • To help keep the overhang down, use mini binder clips or clothes pins to clip down the sides. If you don’t have any, define a crease at the top edge of the baking dish to help keep the overhang from falling back into the baking dish.
  • Alternatively, you can press the Rice Krispie mixture directly into a greased baking dish (or sprayed with nonstick cooking spray) and flip it over to turn out the Rice Krispie treats.
  • You can cut out the inner corners of the wax paper so that it fits more snuggly inside the baking dish, although this isn’t necessary.

Tips for Making the BEST Rice Krispie Treats

  • Put your Oreos in the freezer for about 15 minutes before crumbling them to help keep the stuffing from coming out.
  • Heat the pot on a low and resist the urge to turn it up for the softest treats.
  • Use fresh marshmallows and toss any old ones you have around, it will affect the texture.
  • Don’t use less marshmallows than the recipe calls for but feel free to use up to 20 oz for more gooey treats.
  • Cool completely before cutting into squares.

Equipment Needed to Make Rice Krispie Treats

  • Baking Dish – I’d recommend using a baking dish with straight sides if possible to make the most uniform Rice Krispie treats with the neatest edges. However, this is purely aesthetic – it’ll all taste the same! For Rice Krispie treats that aren’t as thick, make them in a 9 x 9 baking dish.
  • Wax or Parchment Paper
  • Mixing bowls
  • Large pot
  • Rubber spatula

How to Store Rice Krispie Treats

These rice Krispie treats are best enjoyed the day they’re made, and even better within the first few hours in my opinion! They will last up to 2-3 days if kept in an airtight container at room temperature.

Make sure the container is airtight because the exposure to air will cause them to harden, losing their gooey softness!

Alternately they can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 6 days, but they won’t be as gooey when chilled.

Can you Freeze Rice Krispie Treats?

Rice Krispie treats store well for up to 2 months in the freezer.

Wrap individual squares tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, and then place them in a freezer bag.

When you’re ready to enjoy your frozen Rice Krispie treats, let them thaw at room temperature for about 20 minutes.

You can also reheat them in the microwave for 30-45 seconds.

About the Ingredients for Oreo Rice Krispie Treats

Oreos – This recipe uses classic Oreos, but you can make them with any flavour! Try using a different flavour of Oreo to change up these treats. Peanut butter Oreos or chocolate Oreos sound amazing here.

Marshmallows – Mini marshmallows will melt faster than regular sized marshmallows, but you can use either.

Butter – Unsalted butter is best here, but you can use salted butter and simply halve the additional salt.

Salt – A bit of salt helps to balance out the sweetness from the Oreos and marshmallows.

Vanilla extract – Turns a pretty good treat into a GREAT one!

Rice Krispies – I personally prefer regular Rice Krispies but you can use any crisp rice cereal if you like.
