LeapFrog LeapPad2 Power #FMEGifts

Like most little kids these days, Keira absolutely loves technology.  She loves running around with any smartphone she can get her hands on, and figured out how to use the touchscreen at about a year old.   She especially loves to play with games on my tablet but unfortunately Mommy always has to hold it for her because someone has a habit of dropping said tablet.

I was excited to be sent a pink (its also available in green) LeapPad2 Power from LeapFrog for Keira, not only because it meant I could have my phone and tablet back, but also because of the amazing features it boasts.

I was immediately impressed by how easy it is for her to hold, not to mention how sturdy and durable looking the LeapPad2 tablet is. No more mommy hissy fits every-time she drops (or even throws) it on the ground.  I also appreciate that it limits her to activities suitable to kids and prevents things like my friends receiving creepy calls from my phone featuring heavy breathing.

The LeapPad2 Power is actually an upgrade of the LeapPad2.  The difference being that the power includes more pre-installed apps and of course the built-in rechargeable batteries with AC Adapter.  In my opinion it is completely worth the upgrade, I hate searching around for batteries all the time as well as the tantrums that ensue when things stop working.  Plus the batteries keep their charge for up to 9 hours and although it takes 4 hours for a complete re-charge the tablet is still playable while charging since you can just plug in the AC adapter without having to remove the batteries.  The extra apps are certainly nice as well.

LeapFrog LeapPad2 PowerThe LeapPad2 Power includes a stylus (which thanks to the genius people at LeapFog is actually attached to the tablet), a USB cable, Art Studio App, Photo Lab App, Pet Writing App, A Utility Suite (Calculator; Calendar; Note pad; Clock with Stopwatch) and 5 LeapFrog learning songs as well as one free app when you setup LeapFrog connect.

As far as additional apps go, you can purchase apps online from a library of over 800 educator-approved games, apps, songs and more to install to the LeapPad or you can purchase cartridges to insert into the LeapPad. If you already have an older LeapPad and cartridges for it, these are also compatible with the LeapPad2.

Keira has lots of fun with the front facing and back facing cameras which can also function as a video recorder – thanks to the built-in microphone.   She thinks the front facing camera is just hilarious and spends a lot of time kissing herself with it.

The LeapFrog Connect service is also still available by connecting the LeapPad2 to your computer with the included USB cable.  I love that this gives you access to what is called Learning Path which allows you to track your child’s progress with spelling, math, reading, and more to help you learn where your child excels and perhaps where they could use a little more help.  You can use this information in conjunction with the progressive levels of learning to really personalize towards your child’s skill level.  The LeapPad2 is literally able to grow with your child.

Here’s an example of the first 3 reading levels directly from one of the eBooks:

  • Level 1: “She was ready for the ball.”
  • Level 2: “And Cinderella had absolutely everything she needed to go to the ball.”
  • Level 3: “The ind fairy godmother gave a swift wave of her wand… And And Cinderella had absolutely everything she needed to go to the ball.”
If you find that you are always handing over  your own smartphone or tablet to your children to play with  then it just might be time to do yourself a favour and buy them a LeapPad2 this Holiday season.  There is a bonus too, now when we get asked what to get for birthdays and Christmas gifts, we can tell suggest a new cartridge for her LeapPad2.

great review! my daughter is 2.5 and loves her iPad and I've been looking at if it might be better for my sanity if she had her own tablet, this was very helpful!

Great review. I am glad there are multiple levels for different readers. It sounds like a great product to help kids learn and be engaged with the purpose.

The LeapFrog LeapPad2 Power sounds fantastic. Amazing what technology there is around these days and made to measure so to speak for the little ones too. Love it and I'm sure my grandkids would too.
