How to Write an About Page that Grabs Your Attention

The About Page on a blog is one of the hardest things a blogger will ever write. Why is that? Well, the number one reason given is that people don’t know what to say.  Do you know how to write your About Page so that it reflects you, your purpose with your site, and so that it engages with potential readers? If not, check out these tips.

Have an about page

One of the first things you need to do is to make sure you have an About Page. This is not a “More Information Page” or an “All About ME” page.  You need an About Page.  Readers want to find out who you are easily, and not have to guess at which link to click.

Make it easy for me to find YOU

Readers are not looking for more links, or information about a company (unless it is about YOUR company). When they read an About Page, they are looking for YOU.  Where are you? Who are you? Why are you on this site? List at least three facts about yourself or your life that will relate to your readers. For example, if you are a mom writing a parenting blog you will want people to know that you, too, are a mom.

Don’t be boring

This one is the hardest goals to accomplish when writing an About Page, because no one likes to think they are boring. Do you think you are? If you say “My name is Amanda and I have four boys” you are boring.  Instead, try something like this “I’m Amanda, momma of four boys, keeper of the goldfish crackers, short order cook, chauffeur, proud (and tired) soccer mom, and I get by with a little help from my “friends” (coffee and chocolate… lots of coffee and chocolate).” See the difference?

Don’t be windy

While you want to beef up your About section, you don’t want it to be too windy. No more than five facts (no fewer than three) and no more than 450 words (no fewer than 250). This is how you can keep your About Page the proper length and ensure you are still engaging.

Don’t be faceless

I love your story! I love your page! Now… who are you? I may look like you. I may think you have a pleasing face. I may not care for your face, but at least I have a face to put with the name and the words. Readers want to see YOU, so show them who you are. Do NOT leave this off of your page.

Why should I read you?

Here it is- the biggest question of all. Here’s what your reader is thinking when they click on your About Page and read through it: I have four boys, too, Amanda. I love soccer, and coffee, and chocolate. This is all well and good, but to be honest I have enough friends in my life. What I need is a good blog I can read. While I think your blog may hit close to my interests, why should I read your blog and not Stacie’s blog? She has four boys, loves coffee AND wine, and can crochet. What are YOU offering me that she isn’t?

This is where you need to list what your blog is about, why you are writing it, what people can expect from you and what sets you apart from the herd.

Do you have an awesome About Page you would like to share?  I’d love to see them!
