How to Shape Waffle Bowls Instead of Cones
To Shape a waffle bowl if your waffle cone maker did not come with a bowl shaper you will need two ramekins or small bowls.
Start by place a ramekin upside down on your work surface. Immediately after griddling, place your waffle over the inverted ramekin, then place the second ramekin on top and gently press the two together.
When the waffle is cool enough to hold its shape, remove from the ramekins.
Equipment Needed to Make Waffle Cones
Waffle Cone Maker – You will need a Waffle Cone Maker.
Cone Roller – You also need a cone roller, most waffle cone makers will come with one.
Can I use a Waffle Iron Instead of a Waffle Cone Maker?
Waffle irons have deep grids intended to make big, fluffy waffles, where waffle cone makers have a very shallow grid.
Using a waffle iron just won’t work to make cones, and neither will your panini maker for that matter. You could always just make regular waffles and turn them into ice cream sandwiches, but if you are looking to make homemade cones, you will want to get a waffle cone maker.
Tips for the Best Waffle Cones
- Be quick when removing the waffle from the waffle maker, the waffle starts to harden within 5-10 seconds, so it’s important to start rolling the waffles immediately.
- Lay out a clean dish towel for rolling the waffles – they are hot and it makes it easier to handle and protects your work surface.
- You can pinch the tip of the cone closed if desired. If there is a hole you can always stop the ice cream by placing a mini marshmallow at the bottom before scooping in ice cream.
Waffle Cone Variations
If you’d like to decorate the top of your waffle cone, dip your waffle cones in melted chocolate and then dip in sprinkles, nuts or shredded coconut for a sweeter treat.
For vanilla cones, omit the cocoa powder and replace with 1 tbsp flour.
How to Store Homemade Waffle Cones
Waffle cones can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
Ingredients for Waffle Cones
Eggs – Large, room temperature eggs.
Sugar – White granulated sugar.
Butter – I used unsalted butter, but you can use salted if that is all you have on hand.
Flour – Spoon and level the flour when measuring it, or your cupcakes may end up too dense.
Cocoa powder – Unsweetened cocoa powder, not hot chocolate mix.
Baking powder – Helps leaven the waffles.
Salt – Makes all the other ingredients really shine.
Milk – Feel free to use any milk you have available, just make sure it is room temperature before you start baking.

Hi Elizabeth Thanks for your thorough instructions. Most appreciated. I notice your waffle-cone maker is different from the one in the link. Yours has a much smaller pattern than the ones you see on the internet. What brand maker did you use (and is it still available online anywhere - I'm guessing not)? Thanks so much Trish
