What Type of Ice Cube Tray is Best?

You can use nearly any ice cube tray to make cranberry ice cubes. You may prefer silicone trays because they are easier to remove the cranberry cubes from once frozen, but this recipe also works great in other types of trays.

I used cheap standard ice cube trays here and they were just fine.

If you do end up using larger than standard ice cube trays then I would recommend only half filling with water, freezing, then adding another layer of cranberries and fill with water and freeze again. Otherwise you may end up with a layer of floating cranberries. (Something I didn’t find to be an issue using standard trays.)

Alternatives to Water for Making Ice Cubes

You can also pair cranberry with nearly any liquid to make cranberry ice cubes. This is a great way to use a liquid from the drink you will be serving them in, so when they melt they do not dilute the flavour.

Keep in mind that alcohol does not freeze solid, so cranberry vodka cubes will not be as firm as apple cider ice cubes or cranberry juice ice cubes.

What Else Can I Put in Holiday Ice Cubes?

I pair rosemary with the cranberry in this recipe but there are a variety of other fresh herbs and other ingredients that play well with the cranberry ice cubes. Try some of these ideas instead:

  • Mint Leaves
  • Citrus peels
  • Thyme sprigs
  • Small lime wedges
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Lemon verbena leaves

You should make your selection based on the drink you are planning to serve them with.

How to Serve Cranberry Ice Cubes

Cranberry ice cubes instantly add colour and flavour to any drink they are added to. The cranberries and herbs will lightly flavour any drink they are added to with a nice tartness.

Try using them in any cold beverage you serve over the holidays. They work great in:

  • Sparkling water
  • Cranberry juice
  • Orange juice
  • White wine
  • Gin and tonic
  • Cold apple cider

This cranberry ice cube recipe works well in gourmet cocktails such as:

About the Ingredients for Cranberry Ice Cubes

Cranberries – You can use whole fresh cranberries or frozen (not thawed) cranberries. I used Frozen for the cubes pictured and you can see they hold up just as well as fresh would.

Rosemary – See alternatives discussed above. Fresh herbs only, not dried.

Water – See alternatives discussed above. You can also use boiled, and cooled filtered water for less cloudy cubes.
