They can even be made in the slow cooker if you don’t want to heat up your kitchen during the hot summer months like my recipe for Slow Cooker Cherry Dump Cake.
How to Serve Apple Dump Cake
Apple dump cake can be served warm or cool. It’s best with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream with a drizzle of caramel sauce.
I served mine with homemade caramel sauce (pictured below) which is easier to make than you think and so fabulously delicious. I highly recommend.
How to Store Apple Dump Cake
Apple dump cake can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Keep it covered.
You can also freeze apple dump cake for up to 3 months. To freeze, place dump cake in a freezer bag or airtight container and store it in the freezer.
Reheat in the microwave, or in a baking dish, covered with foil at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes or until just heated through.
Tips for Making the Best Apple Dump Cake
- Make sure you are generous with the butter. Check the cake partway an make sure there are no dry powdery parts. If there is add a small pat of butter to cover any dry areas.
- It’s important that the ingredients are spread out evenly across the cake so it bakes evenly.
- For a square pan and a smaller cake, you can easily halve the recipe, but the bake should be about the same.
How to Make Caramel Apple Dump Cake
Caramel and apple are a classic combination. For my tastes, a little caramel drizzled on top of vanilla ice cream is enough sweetness for this dessert but if you want to add the richness of caramel and make Caramel Apple Dump Cake you can!
The recipe remains the same except between the apple cinnamon layer and the cake layer you will lay down a cup of homemade caramel sauce. Then proceed with the recipe as written.

About the Ingredients for Apple Dump Cake
Apple Pie Filling – You can use homemade apple pie filling or store bought.
Cinnamon – Ground cinnamon or you can swap in apple pie spice.
Cake Mix – I used Butter Pecan Cake Mix but honestly didn’t think it made a difference in flavour. Any vanilla or yellow cake mix will work.
Butter – Salted Butter, cut it cold and let it get to room temperature.
Pecans – Pecan Halves. Could substitute with walnuts!
