ComfySleep Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillow by ComfyComfy Canada

For almost a year now I have been using a natural memory foam pillow that I have been in love with.  The switch from a traditional pillow made such a huge impact in my sleep quality that I can honestly say I will never go back to one.  I was asked by ComfyComfy Canada to review their ComfySleep Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillow, and naturally I was curious about what it would be like to sleep on.

ComfySleep Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillows are handmade in Canada with Ecocert certified organic Canadian grown buckwheat hulls.  As a matter of fact, each pillow is filled and packaged in ComfyComfy Canada’s workshop in Toronto.

The ComfySleep Pillows have been designed with the goal of providing ergonomic, supportive, restful, and restorative sleep.  The buckwheat hulls hold their shape and do not flatten the way other pillow fillings do which keeps your neck properly supported all night through, keeping your body properly aligned.

The cover is made from unbleached cotton twill with a hidden zipper on the side which allows access to add or remove hulls to adjust the height without affecting the actual shape of the pillow.  ComfyComfy Canada include an extra pound of organic hulls to help you increase the height as needed, making this pillow great for both back and side sleepers.

One of my concerns that will keep me from ever using pillows filled with anything but natural fillings is off-gassing.  Seriously, you spend a lot of time in bed, why would you want to spend that time breathing in potentially harmful toxins from your pillow.    ComfySleep pillows are filled with buckwheat hulls that are cleaned with forced air to remove fragments and dust.  They are not fumigated or treated in any way so you can sleep easy knowing that no harmful chemicals were used to grow or clean the hulls filling your pillow.   They are also hypoallergenic!

The ComfySleep Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillow is a firm feeling pillow and it is pretty heavy.   As a side sleeper I found this was perfect as I did not need to help support my head with my hand under the pillow.  Rather, I am able to create the groove for my head and it just stays that way all night long.

Another benefit is that the the pillow stays cool.  The hulls allow air to circulate through the pillow, which means heat and moisture don’t get trapped against your skin.  Both sides of the pillow are “the cool side” so there is also no need to flip it over as it does not store heat the way other pillows do.

One concern I did have prior to using the pillow was the sound.  I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to sleep because of rustling all night but I really only ever notice it when I put my head down and even then only if I am focusing on it.  The pillow keeps you so supported that you don’t move around enough to make repetitive rustling noises with the rusks so I think that makes it a non-issue.

Another concern some may have is seeing the price tag on the ComfySleep compared to traditional pillows.  Did you know that a buckwheat pillow can last up to 10 years?  That is a long time, especially when compared to other pillows which last only about 3 years if you are lucky.   Plus Buckwheat hull pillows are a great earth friendly option as they are compostable and sustainable.

As much as I loved this pillow, my husband loved it a little bit more and actually ended up stealing it from me after trying it out when he got home from working night-shift.  I was actually so shocked that he liked it that I didn’t even put up a fight to get the pillow back.  For as long as I’ve known him, he has never slept with a pillow.  He always complains that his pillow is too tall, too low, too soft, too hard, that it gives him headaches, back-aches, neck-aches… you get the idea.

He thinks that the ComfySleep Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillow is just the most amazingly comfortable pillow he has ever slept on and swears he will never go back to sleeping on his arm again.

The ComfySleep Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillow comes in three sizes and for those interested in going the DIY route; ComfyComfy Canada also offer packages of bulk buckwheat hulls.

  24. Well, I recall reading that the healthiest way to sleep is without a pillow, but it feels really weird and hard to sleep when I’m not sleeping on a pillow, so this sounds like the next best thing. I really like the “ComfyNeck” in particular, it reminded me of those whatchamacallit rollers that I was reading about for stretching after a workout. Stretching while you sleep? Brilliant. 🙂
