Tips for the Best Christmas Sprinkle Bread

  • Use jimmies sprinkles – they hold their colour and won’t bleed into the batter like nonpareils.
  • Fold gently – stir just until the sprinkles are evenly distributed to avoid streaking.
  • Check for doneness early – every oven varies, so begin checking around the 60-minute mark.
  • Cool completely before icing – warm bread will melt the icing rather than allowing it to sit beautifully on top.
  • Add sprinkles to the icing immediately – so they adhere before the icing sets.
  • Use room-temperature ingredients – this helps the batter blend smoothly and keeps the loaf tender.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Sprinkles – red and green jimmies work best. Avoid nonpareils, as they bleed easily.
  • Butter – salted butter balances the sweetness, but you can use unsalted with a small pinch of salt instead.
  • Flour – Be sure to spoon and level when measuring the flour.
  • Milk – whole milk is ideal, but 2% or a non-dairy milk such as oat or almond works well.
  • Vanilla – pure vanilla extract adds the best flavour, but artificial vanilla can be used if needed.
  • Icing – the vanilla icing is simple and traditional, but you can swap it for almond icing or even a cream cheese glaze for a richer finish.
  • Food colouring – not needed here, but a touch of green or red in the icing can make the loaf look extra festive.
