Apple Baked Oatmeal
This comforting apple baked oatmeal is filled with chopped apples and warm spices. A cosy make-ahead breakfast perfect for busy mornings.

This apple baked oatmeal is a wholesome and comforting breakfast that’s perfect for chilly mornings. It’s a twist on the classic banana baked oatmeal I make often, but with sweet, tender apples and warming spices in every bite. My kids love the little chunks of apple throughout, and I like that it’s easy to throw together in one bowl with pantry staples.
It bakes up soft and slightly chewy with golden edges – a perfect way to enjoy oats in the morning. Whether you serve it fresh from the oven or reheat leftovers for a quick breakfast, this recipe is simple, nourishing, and delicious.

Tips for Best Results
- Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith so they hold their shape while baking.
- Don’t skip the applesauce – it adds moisture and helps bind everything together.
- Let it rest after baking for 5–10 minutes before slicing, so it sets nicely.
- Make it ahead and store it in the fridge for up to 4 days; just reheat in the microwave or oven.

Ingredients & Substitutions
- Old-fashioned oats: Use rolled oats for the best texture. Quick oats will be softer but will work; steel-cut oats won’t work here.
- Cinnamon & nutmeg: Adds warm spice; swap in apple pie spice or a pinch of cloves if preferred.
- Baking powder: Helps the oatmeal bake up light and cohesive.
- Milk: Any kind works – dairy, almond, oat, or soy. Use what you like.
- Applesauce: Unsweetened is best, but sweetened will work in a pinch. It adds moisture and apple flavour.
- Chopped apples: Use a mix of peeled and unpeeled for texture and colour. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji are great choices.
- Maple syrup: Can be swapped with honey or brown sugar (adjust to taste).
- Egg: Helps bind the oatmeal. For an egg-free version, try a flax egg (1 tbsp flaxseed + 3 tbsp water).
- Butter: Adds richness. Use melted coconut oil or a neutral oil for a dairy-free version.
- Pecans or walnuts: Omit for nut-free or swap with pumpkin seeds.
