Tips for Making the BEST Oreo Balls

  • Do not over-mix or the mixture will become too loose and won’t hold together but DO make sure the mixture is thoroughly combined.
  • Do not skip chilling the oreo balls prior to coating in candy as it helps the balls keep their shape when dipping them in the melts. Avoid freezing the balls as the candy melts will set immediately.
  • Make sure to move quickly as the melts will begin to set fast.
  • Always heat the melts on a low setting to help prevent it from seizing and clumping up.
  • If your melts do seize up you can loosen it up with a little coconut oil or vegetable shortening stirred in until smooth.

How to Store Oreo Balls

There are many different ways to store Oreo balls, depending on how long you want them to last and what kind of consistency you prefer. Here are a few suggestions for storing these delicious treats:

Refrigerator Storage

Oreo balls can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week. To ensure freshness, place them in an airtight container or resealable bag. This will prevent any air from getting to them and causing them to become hard or dry. Do not store your Oreo balls at room temperature, since the filling is made with cream cheese.

Freezer Storage

For longer storage, Oreo balls can be frozen for up to three months. To freeze them, place them on a baking sheet lined with wax paper and put them in the freezer until they are firm. Once they are firm, you can transfer them to an airtight container or resealable bag. When ready to eat, simply thaw them in the refrigerator overnight.

If you need to stack the Oreo balls in your storage container, make sure to place a layer of wax paper between each layer. This will prevent them from sticking together and ruining their shape.

About the Ingredients for Snowman Oreo Balls

Oreos – You will need 45 regular Oreos for this. (Flavoured are OK too but avoid Double Stuf.) That is 500g of Oreos for the Canadians, or just under 18 oz for Americans so you can grab the correct sized package.

Cream cheese – Use regular cream cheese for the best texture and flavour. Light will work too.

Candy melts – Use bright white candy melts or melting chocolate for perfectly white snowmen. You can use white chocolate but your snowmen will have a yellow tint to them.

Mini Oreos – For the brim of the top hat, mini Oreos work perfectly. You will want seperate into two halves and scrape off the icing and discard (or snack, no judgement here.)

Rolos – Dark chocolate Rolos are a better match to the Oreos, but I couldn’t get my hands on any, and it still worked fine. So use whichever is easier for you to source.

Cookie icing – Red cookie icing is perfect for both creating a red band around the top hat and “gluing” the holly on. It goes on looking like gel but sets to a nice opaque red.

Carrot sprinkles – You can get these in the Wilton snowman kit – which I was unable to find in Canada when I made these. I was able to order a snowman sprinkle mix from Etsy that was reasonably priced and ships from within Canada. You could also just use orange tic tacs or even snip pieces of orange starburst into a carrot shape.

Black nonpareils – I found the black nonpareils included in the mix I received to be too large, so I ordered these black nonpareils and used the second smallest ones. From the look of it, the ones included in the Wilton kit seem to be the right size.

Holly sprinkles – This is another one that is difficult to find in Canada this early in the season. It might be easier to find closer to December. I happened to have a 6 cell Wilton holiday sprinkle mix on hand otherwise I may have had to opt for no decoration or using snowflakes from the carrot mix I bought. Americans have a wide range of great options for Holly sprinkles like these Wilton holly sprinkles that are quite a bit different from the ones I used.
