What is a Roy Rogers?

A Roy Rogers is a non-alcoholic mixed drink classic that consists of cola and grenadine syrup. The grenadine syrup gives the drink its characteristic red color, while the cola provides the fizzy bubbles and sweetness.

This refreshing beverage is perfect for sipping on a hot summer day or enjoying with a meal.

While this non-alcoholic drink is named after the famous cowboy actor, Roy Rogers, it is unknown how or when the drink was created.

Whether you’re a fan of the iconic Western star or just enjoy a delicious mixed drink, a Roy Rogers is sure to hit the spot.

Variations on the Roy Rogers

A Roy Rogers is quite sweet, and better suited to the palates of children. Most adults will find it a little too saccharine. Here is how you can adjust any Roy Rogers recipe for adult palates.

Add citrus – A squeeze of fresh lemon juice or lime juice will help to balance out the sweetness.

Top it off with soda water – Adding a little soda water or club soda will tone down the sweetness quite a bit.

Cranberry Roy Rogers – Pour in an ounce or two of cranberry juice to tame the sweetness.

About the Ingredients for a Roy Rogers Mocktail

The classic roy rogers drink is made with simple ingredients, just cola with a splash of grenadine.

Grenadine – Grenadine syrup is made from pomegranate juice and has a brilliant red colour. Do not substitute with pomegranate syrup though as it is not as sweet, and quite a bit tart. If you need a good substitute then maraschino cherry juice is your best bet for flavour and weight. You can also easily adjust the sweetness of the drink by adjusting the amount of grenadine you add.

Cola – Coca Cola is my go-to for a Roy Rogers. Your favourite Cola is probably your best bet through as that is the dominant flavour. Just remember that we are adding grenadine that will kick up the sweetness, so using a drier cola will result in a tastier drink. I personally find that Pepsi is far too sweet to make a tasty Roy Rogers. You can also use diet cola if you want to cut down on the sugar. Cherry coke is another great option.

Cherries – Garnish with maraschino cherries to make the drink even more fun looking.
