Ikea Tarva Dresser Makeover with Fabric Lined Drawers

I’m excited the announce that I am returning this year as part of the BEHR DIY Expert program which means I will have plenty of motivation to experiment with BEHR paint to create some fun and colourful creations.  You can meet the 2015 BEHR DIY Experts on BEHR’s Blog: Colorfully BEHR.

I picked up the Ikea Tarva dresser with 5 drawers awhile back as I wanted more storage in my office space.  It is a fairly cheap piece of furniture but solid (pine) wood and very simple in design. I wanted to brighten up my space and knew this would be a great job for Behr paint to take care of.

I chose to go with two Behr colours from the Marquee line – Cameo White (MQ3-32) and Breezeway (MQ3-21).  I used the Cameo White on the sides and top of the dresser and Breezeway on the front of the drawers.

Directions:

Start by assembling your dresser.

I didn’t use a primer, and painted the Behr paint right onto the bare wood, requiring only two good coats.

The Tarva dresser comes with these kind of ugly drawer knobs  so those definitely had to go.  I don’t think even paint could have fixed them.   I choose some gorgeous glass and gold drawer knobs that really complemented the paint and attached those.

Once assembled I felt it was quite pretty but needed a little something so I decided to line the drawers with some gorgeous fabric I found.

This is a super easy project, simply measure the inside of the drawers – the Tarva drawers are approx 10.5 x 13.5 inches.  Then measure out and cut your fabric to fit.  I used modge podge to coat the bottom of the drawers with a foam brush.  Start lining the drawers with fabric by placing down one edge and carefully placing down the rest and smoothing it out as you go.

Once the fabric is smoothed out, go over the fabric again with more modge podge on the top of the fabric.  This will help to really harden the fabric down onto the inside of the drawer.

Allow to completely dry before using.

Enjoy!

Isn’t it gorgeous?  I am a little sad that my office is in the basement, I think this is a piece worthy of showing off!

This is really beautiful now. I love the fabric lined drawers, what a great idea especially with the extra modge podge to harden the fabric which makes it so much more durable.

Beautiful! It will be so handy for storage, and I really like the fabric lining in the drawers. I hadn't thought to use fabric as drawer liners.
