How to Add More Nutrition to this Pumpkin Smoothie
Use these easy ways to make it a healthy pumpkin smoothie (well, I guess, healthier):
- Add a scoop of vanilla protein powder for a protein boost!
- Both Chia seeds and ground flaxseeds are a great source of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.
- Hemp hearts or hemp seeds are high in protein and essential fatty acids making them a great add-in to smoothies.
- Make it a green smoothie! Go ahead, throw in a handful of spinach if you like.
Equipment Needed to Make Smoothies
All you need to make a smoothie is a good quality blender. If you are going to be making smoothies a lot, it is worth investing in a high speed blender, such as a Blendtec or Vitamix Blender.
I have been using a Blendtec blender for almost 10 years now, and it is used on a constant basis. I only recently had to replace the wildside jar, but otherwise it powers through anything I throw at it still!
Can You Prepare this Smoothie Ahead of Time?
Yes! You definitely can prep this smoothie ahead of time. Once prepared, pour your smoothie into ice cube trays, then freeze for up to 3 months. Once frozen I usually transfer mine to a freezer bag so that the smoothie cubes don’t get frostbitten.
Once you’re ready to drink your smoothie, place the smoothie cubes in a mason jar and cover it with a lid. Allow to thaw out at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes then give your jar a good shake. Enjoy.
You could also return your frozen smoothie cubes to your blender with a little milk and blend.
Freezing directly in your mason jars is also an option but I am always concerned about the jars breaking when the smoothie freezes. Although if you leave enough head room that should be OK.
About the Ingredients to Make a Pumpkin Smoothie
This autumnal pumpkin smoothie recipe makes 2 small smoothies or 1 large smoothie.
Banana – Use a frozen banana so you can use less ice for a thicker, more flavourful smoothie. We use just enough banana to sweeten the smoothie without making it taste like banana. If you want to substitute the banana, use a ripe avocado instead. (This will affect the colour.)
Pumpkin – Make sure you use pure pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling. You can also use homemade pumpkin puree. Making your own pumpkin purée is a great way to have a huge batch on hand. This is a great way to use up leftover pumpkin puree.
Yogurt – You can use either Vanilla Greek Yogurt or Plain Greek Yogurt. If you go with vanilla yogurt you can omit the honey, and if using plain yogurt you will likely want the additonal sweetener.
Honey – Use the honey to sweeten to taste, if desired, or use maple syrup or any other liquid sweetener of your choice. Avoid granulated sweeteners to maintain the smooth texture.
Milk – Whole milk tastes best in my opinion but you can substitute with skim milk, or if you want a dairy-free or vegan pumpkin smoothie, use coconut milk, almond milk, soy milk etc… Add more if necessary to thin out the smoothie to get a perfect consistency.
Spice – Use store bought pumpkin spice mix or your own favourite blend of spices. Feel free to use your favourite warming spices instead. Whether you use a sprinkle of cinnamon, a pinch of nutmeg, or a dash of pumpkin pie spice is up to you.
Ice – Ice cubes are used to not only cool the smoothie but thicken it as well. Use your judgment to get the desired texture.
