I knew I wanted to breastfeed as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I just wanted the very best for my baby. When she came 3 months early I rented a hospital grade pump so I could pump at home to have milk to bring to the NICU for the nurses to feed her. This wasn’t easy. Waking up every 2-3 hours in the night to a pump is a lot harder than waking up to a crying hungry baby. The pump is not cute for one thing. Establishing breastfeeding with her was difficult and frustrating as well since she was so little and weak at the point she was physically ready to start sucking and swallowing. Still, I worked hard to ensure she could come home and we would be able to breastfeed.
She did come home, and we did breastfeed. Right up until she was about 14 months old and I found out I was pregnant again. Sadly she self-weaned and that was that. Breastfeeding was hard at times, however the rewards more than made up for it. When we nursed I could feel a sacred bond forming between us as she would look up at me with those big love filled eyes of hers, grasping at me with her tiny little hands. While we did bottle feed at times, and it was a nice time to bond as well, it just wasn’t the same experience as when we nursed.
I miss those quiet times sitting together quietly as she nursed just watching each other with love. When Milk Mom Baby approached me to check out their Breast Milk Keepsake Kits I was thrilled at the very idea. The idea of being able to create a keepsake of this special and unique time in our lives was very appealing.
Milk Mom Baby was founded by a new Mom named Brooke who was inspired by her own breastfeeding experience to find a way to preserve breast milk in a lasting form to fit perfect inside a locket. Milk Mom Baby offers a variety of kits to preserve your own breast milk in a locket as a unique memento, and they have made it so simple that anyone can do it. The kits range in price starting at just $16 for a “Use your own locket” kit. There is quite a nice selection of beautiful lockets available but after careful consideration I chose the beautiful Cavan Style Kit.
The Cavan Style kit really stood out to me, I loved the delicate cut-out pattern that displays the milk inside. I also loved that both the locket and chain included are sterling silver. The inspiration for this kit is the city of Cavan in Ireland where Brooke and her husband stayed overnight in a castle on their honeymoon. What a cute story!
The kit includes everything you need to create your keepsake complete with ingredients for preservation, protective glaze, and detailed instructions. You need to provide the breast milk obviously. While I had stopped expressing a long time ago, luckily enough I still had some milk in the freezer I hadn’t yet thrown out. (Totally fate!)
I found the instructions were detailed and easy to follow along and loved that you can use fresh breast milk or frozen breast milk. It takes roughly 2 weeks, give or take a few days depending on if you work on it on consecutive days or not, to complete from start to finish. That said, it wasn’t a lot of work. There is just lots of little steps to take and then long waiting periods before you can come back to it. This is all necessary to ensure you have a beautiful end product and totally worth the wait.
I was incredibly pleased with the end product. It is just a gorgeous piece I will be able to cherish forever. The locket itself is high quality and perfect on its own, but the fact that it holds within it a real physical reminder of our bonding time makes it invaluable. Since the milk is dried and treated it will never “go bad” so I don’t have to worry about losing this keepsake to time.
Milk Mom Baby Breast Milk Keepsakes make for a unique gift for any breastfeeding mother that will be sure to be cherished for a long time to come. All Breast Milk Keepsake Locket Kits also come gift wrapped with colourful ribbon so they are literally ready to give!
