Paper Plate Halloween Scene Puppets

This fun Paper Plate Halloween Scene Puppet craft features a ghost or bat puppet that kids can move around a spooky backdrop. I love kids crafts that have a purpose after the craft is complete and this one really inspires imaginative play.

I have included a printable template for three different scenes including a haunted house, a spooky graveyard and a creepy forest.

Of course, your kids may want to get creative and design their own paper plate night-time scenes for their puppets. (See the ones above that my kids aged 6 and 8 did on their own.)

Paper Plate Halloween Scene Puppets

Supplies:
Paper Plates (These are the exact 6″ plates I used)
Printable Halloween Scene Printable
X-acto knife
Black Acrylic Paint
Waterpaint
Paint Brushes
Popsicle Sticks
Glue
Stapler
Sharpie

Directions:

Print out the Printable Halloween Scene Printable template and carefully cut out the scenes.

On the back of a paper plate, draw out a rim about 1/2″ thick around the paper plate.

Place the template across the lower quarter of the plate, lining it up with the rim you drew. Trace around the template.

In the part of the plate you will be cutting away, draw your puppet.

Use an X-acto knife or scissors to cut out the middle of your paper plate following your drawn out lines, including your puppet.

Paint your popsicle stick and the back of the cut paper plate bat black and allow to dry. You may need two coats to get good coverage.

Use the waterpaint to paint the front of a second paper plate.  Get creative here. I did a moon and what my kids describe as a galaxy sky but you could go completely solid as well.

Add details to your night sky as well as to your puppets. Add starts to your sky. Eyes on the trees, your bat or ghost. Add windows to the haunted house. Little details give a lot of atmosphere.

Glue your puppet onto the painted popsicle stick.

Lay the black paper plate scene on top of the night sky paper plate.

Staple all around the two paper plates leaving a small section at the bottom open.

Slide your puppet into the open section at the bottom and have fun moving your puppet around your spooky Halloween scene.
