994473B_93008918_OL.pdf A few months after my daughter Keira was born I was invited to a baby shower.   I looked over the baby shower registry and found myself rolling my eyes at a lot of the items listed.  Even as a first time mom myself, It was clear to me that it had been (poorly) put together by the first time mom-to-be all by herself.  One item from that registry still sticks in my mind to this day as being especially ridiculous, especially for someone who planned to try to breastfeed.  It was a full system of bottles and nipples to take baby from birth to toddler.

Now before I was a mom, I would have thought this to be reasonable, a great idea even.  That was before I understood how picky and individual babies can be.  Now I know that buying a complete bottle system without having tested the bottles and nipples on the baby can turn into a very expensive investment with no return.  I have friends who went through 5-6 different bottle systems before finding one that their baby would happily take.

The Playtex Nipple Variety Pack is a smart solution for new and expecting parents to help them find the system that works best.  The Playtex Nipple Variety Pack contains four distinct silicone nipples including Naturalatch, Breastlike Shape, Fullsized and Angled.  The nipples are as unique as your own baby and allows you to match their unique feeding style right from the start.  The Variety Pack also comes in both low flow for newborns and medium flow for infants over 3 months.

I was looking forward to trying out the Playtex nipples with little baby Ava.  We have been very successful at breastfeeding and I do plan to continue exclusively breastfeeding with her, however it is nice to get a little break now and then which is where the bottles come in with a little expressed breast-milk.   Getting her to take a bottle now and then also provides Daddy with a little bit of bonding time.  I’ll be honest though, it’s mostly about giving me a break now and then.

We got started first with the NaturaLatch slow flow nipple as it was described as being designed to be most like mother.  She took to this nipple easily and latched on without a fuss which I attribute to the more natural shape and feel of the nipple.  I have to say that I was actually a little shocked by how easily she took to the NaturaLatch nipple as it was her first introduction to a bottle.  It can be tricky to get a breastfed baby to take a bottle and this was just so easy.

We had some success with the Breastlike Shape nipple which is designed to mimic the breast because of the slope of the area around the nipple.   It was clear she preferred the NaturaLatch nipple though as it was a little harder to get her to latch on and stay latched.

Our trial of the Fullsized and angled nipples resulted in only a lot of tight lipped fussing and when I was able to get it into her mouth she just pushed them out with her tongue. The Fullsized nipple is designed for babies with wider mouths and the angled nipple is designed for upright feeding.  I think these nipples were just unable to trick her into thinking it was mommy and reminded her more of the soothers she absolutely refuses to take.

The nipples are all designed to work with Playtex VentAire or Nurser with Drop-Ins Liners so you also have the choice of bottle style that best fits your needs.   The VentAire bottles are designed for use at home and to reduce gas, colic and spit-up through a unique venting system in the bottom of the bottle that helps to keep air out of the milk.  They come in both 6 and 9 oz sizes so it easy to continue using this system as your baby’s needs change.

The Playtex Nurser with Drop-Ins Liners are designed for on the go – just drop in the pre-sterilized disposable liners for a clean bottle at anytime and anywhere.  The Nursers come in 4 and 8 oz sizes.

A lot of my mom friends who bottle feed swear by the Drop-Ins and I did find that I liked them, even for use at home.  That said I also liked the VentAire bottles quite a bit and since we generally only bottle feed at home they suit our lifestyle the most.

Both bottles definitely do help with spit-up, I would say the amount of spit-up is about on par to what we experience with breastfeeding.  I also found they made it easy to feed her semi-upright thanks to their angled design. This is important as it has been shown that babies who feed laying down are more prone to ear infections.

I think Ava’s reaction to our trial of the various nipples included in the Playtex Nipple Variety Pack illustrates pretty well as to why buying an entire bottle system for a baby without experimenting first could end up being a very poor decision.    Only the new Playtex Nipple Variety Pack allows you to skip trial and error and find the perfect fit for your perfectly unique baby!

  1. Excellent blog! My daughter is currently in hospital trying to keep little Miss inside, she’s a tad early and has no bottles. She does plan on nursing, but she plans on bottle feeding breast milk a time or two throughout the day as well, she feels the transition from breast to bottle or cup would be easier, but in the same respect she wants bottles similar to the breast as to not ‘confuse’ baby.

We are off to the hospital in a couple of hours, I have to pick up a few things while I”m out I’m going to have a look for these. Thanks so much!

  2. First, little Ava is so adorable. I too breast fed and I had such bad luck finding a nipple for my daughter. Bought and tried so many. This is a great idea.

  3. I wish other other companies offered a variety pack! I was (and still am) happy with the current brand we use, but at one point, I was buying different shapes/styles.
