How to Survive Camping in the Heat

Thankfully there are ways to survive camping in the heat, allowing for an excellent night’s rest in preparation for many adventures in the great outdoors.

While camping in the summer can be a fantastic experience, it can also be an extremely hot one. No one wants to camp in a tent that feels like a furnace. Not only does it make getting a good night’s sleep a challenge, but it also makes the entire trip downright uncomfortable. Thankfully there are ways to survive camping in the heat, allowing for an excellent night’s rest in preparation for many adventures in the great outdoors.

How to Survive Camping in the Heat

Choose a Shady Spot

When selecting a campsite, it is important to factor in whether or not it provides shade. Having some kind of tree cover will keep your tent much cooler than if it was placed in direct sunlight.

Use a Reflective Sunshade

If you want to survive camping in the heat, you will want to ensure that you employ a reflective sunshade. These shades help to reflect the sunlight away from the tent, leaving everything it covers much cooler. Use a reflective shade to block out your campsite, including your tent and surrounding areas.

Take Advantage of The Breeze

Wind can be seen as nature’s air conditioning so take advantage of that breeze, even if it isn’t a significant one. Mesh tents work perfectly for allowing the wind to travel freely through the tent throughout the day and night, so using one is a fantastic way to keep your tent cool in the summer heat.

Remove Your Rain Cover

If the weather permits, remove your rain cover from the tent. This is because over the evening hours your breath and body heat will condense and add humidity to the tent. Removing the rain cover allows for the moisture and heat to escape through the top of the tent.

Bring a Portable Fan

A good camp fan will be a quiet, lightweight and portable. In fact, most of them can be attached to the tent’s wall, floor or ceiling making it easier to stay cool. Just make sure to choose one that has foam blades as it will be being used in a small space.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking lots of water is critical when it comes to remaining safe, cool and healthy in hot weather. Always remember to drink plenty of water while on a summer camping trip as it is the best way to avoid overheating.

Cool Off

If it is really hot outside, soak a towel in water and lay it across the back of your neck or the front of your forehead. This will help to bring down your internal temperature and keep your body cool. It is also a good idea to have a cool shower before you head to bed to help stay cool overnight as you sleep. You can also bring a small inflatable kiddie pool to fill with water and soak your feet in. These are all great ways to keep yourself cool.

Camping in the summer can be a really great experience as long as you remain cool. There are several ways to survive camping in the heat. Just remember to choose a shady spot, use a reflective sunshade, take advantage of the breeze, remove your rain cover and bring a portable fan. It is also a good idea to stay hydrated and find other ways to stay cool while on your trip. Don’t let the heat spoil your next camping adventure, be prepared.
