How to Keep your Electrical Bill Low During the Summer

Summer isn’t far away and naturally it brings warmer weather and beautiful sunlight. While many look forward to t-shirt weather, beaches and beautiful gardens, others are dreading the rising electric bills that come along with it all. Thankfully, there are ways to keep your electric bill low during the summer months, it just takes some creativity and effort.

How to Keep your Electrical Bill Low During the Summer

Seal and Upgrade Windows

If your windows are not properly sealed, it allows them to leak air. This makes air conditioning less effective, working overtime to cool your home. Caulking cracks or leaks and adding weather stripping to your windows will keep the cool air from leaking out. Old windows are also an issue. If your windows haven’t been replaced in a long time, they probably are not energy efficient, costing you lots of money. Replacing your windows is an investment that will save you money in the long run.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

There are several thermostats on the market right now that can help to improve your electricity use. No matter if you are away or asleep, you can find one that regulates the temperature or allows you to change it with your smartphone. In fact, some of them create schedules based of your needs. These thermostats are fantastic when it comes to saving on your electricity bill.

Replace Your HVAC Filters

Your HVAC runs smoothly because of its air filter. Air filters prevent dust from obstructing vents and help to promote better air circulation. When you air filters are dirty, your HVAC system is going to have to work harder in order to circulate the air. Replace your filters at least every couple months, especially if you have kids or pets.

Use Ceiling Fans

If you are looking to increase your energy efficiency, using the ceiling fans in your house can help. Ceiling fans do a great job of circulating cool air, working together with your air conditioner. Ceiling fans are generally inexpensive to run and help to save you money on your electricity bill.

Cook Outside

When you spend time cooking indoors, it generates a lot of heat. This puts a lot of strain on your air conditioning unit. Thankfully, the summer is the perfect time to cook outdoors. Grilling outside will save you some money on your electricity bill, so do that whenever possible. If the weather doesn’t permit, use appliances that produce less heat like slow cookers.

Close the Curtains

Having all the curtains in the house open raises the temperature of your home, especially when the sun is shining at full force. When you close the curtains and block out the sunlight, you can reduce the incoming heat.

When it comes to keeping your electricity bill low this summer, there are a few things you can do that will save you money. Seal and upgrade any windows that need it, use a programmable thermostat, replace your HVAC filters, utilize the ceiling fans in your home, cook outside whenever possible and close the curtains when it is too sunny out. Taking these simple steps can help to save you money this summer.
