What the Konmari Method Didn’t Tell you

Here is what the Konmari method didn’t tell you.

Marie Kondo’s method of tidying promises a home that is free of clutter and that you will never need to tidy your home this way ever again. While her famous Konmari method of tidying is quite unique, there are a few flaws in this system. Some things she fails to leave out in her method could make tidying using this method, not all it’s cracked up to be. Here is what the Konmari method didn’t tell you.

What the Konmari Method Didn’t Tell you

The Konmari method focuses on organizing YOUR belongings

According to Marie Kondo, you should keep the items that spark joy for you. This goes for each and every member of the home. If you have young kids, you may struggle with being able to find a balance between sparking joy and practicality. Young kids might not think jeans spark joy, but at some point, they need to put on a pair of pants. If you are going to have everyone sort through their own stuff, make sure you pay special attention to your kids to make sure they still have clothes to wear by the end.

This method does not take into account usefulness

I don’t know about you, but if you don’t like cooking, very few things in the kitchen will likely spark joy for you. The Konmari method doesn’t take into account things such as usefulness and necessity. For example, I’m not sure how many people feel joy by holding their sunscreen. You may need to wear a uniform to work, that might not necessarily bring you joy either. Keep these in mind if you decide to go through the Konmari method.

This method is going to force you to get creative

Konmari doesn’t care about how colorful a bin looks. In fact, Marie Kondo believes you have everything you need to organize your home right in your own home. She advises you to use shoe boxes to organize socks if needed and to create your own drawer organizers. This method is going to require a little bit of creativity to get the job done. This is a great thing for people organizing on a budget!

You will likely need to declutter again

The reality is that things enter our home without us really noticing them. What brings us joy may change and this will mean that we may need to do this whole process all over again someday. Despite her promise of not having to tidy again, you will probably need to tidy again. However, if you do it right the first time, it should be a long time until you need to cross this bridge. If you are putting great systems in place, you will have an organized home and one that stays tidy.

I know there is a lot of hype about the Konmari method out there, but the truth is that this is not the best method for everyone. Use this information to help you make an informed decision about whether or not this is a great method for you.
