When my husband and I first moved in together we dreamed of saving up for a big house, fancy cars and well.. winning the lottery. Instead, life happened, and here we are years later still paying more on rent than we would on a mortgage. Looking back at that time, I think if we had been more financially savvy at the time we could have easily saved enough for a down payment on a nice house within that first year. Especially since we were paying 1/4 of the amount we currently pay in rent.
Thankfully, over the past few years I’ve gotten pretty good at managing our finances, and learned to live within our means. We’ve joined the world of making our dreams reality but we are also careful to save for whatever may come. We are now well on our way to getting our first house while still setting aside a decent chunk every month into our retirement savings. We are also financially prepared for most of the “what ifs”. That is what you call being #LifeReady and we are finally there.
Of course, our girls are a wonderful motivation to ensure we are financially ready, two very good reasons indeed.
It’s a little surprising that only 28% of Canadians feel financially ready. However, I wasn’t surprised to find that I fall within that 28%, I feel pretty confident that we are heading in the right direction for a financially sound future. Where do you fall? Take the Manulife #LifeReady Quiz to see where you sit and find out what you can do to become more #LifeReady.
