When I was 28 weeks pregnant with my daughter Keira, my membranes ruptured suddenly and without warning in the middle of the night. After 5 days of bed-rest in the hospital she couldn’t wait any longer and made her appearance 3 months early and only weighing 1360 grams (3 lbs). A team of specialists were at the ready in my labour room ready to scoop her up and do the best they could to keep her healthy and alive. Thanks to their hard work, and to the work of all the doctors and nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit we were able to bring home our tiny but healthy baby two months later.
For the families of preemies, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) quickly becomes your home away from home. Miracles are performed daily in the NICU thanks to both life saving technology and the compassionate care of the staff. The tiniest human lives are saved on a daily basis, and this wouldn’t be possible without the support and treatment provided by the NICU.
Avery’s Act of Kindness is working hard to support the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre NICU to help preemies and their families.
Despite the best care though, not every NICU story has a happy ending. Baby Avery was born 3 months premature at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and weighed 2lbs 12 oz. Despite being cared for by some of the best doctors and nurses in Canada’s she was unable to overcome Primary Pulmonary Hypertension Disease. She passed away after 11 unforgettable days with her family by her side.
Avery’s Act of Kindness is working to raise $10,000 towards a new incubator for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital. These incubators are the first home for many preemies – providing a stable environment in place of the mothers womb. This equipment will help to save many more babies like Avery in the future.
