Dreamcatchers originated with the Ojibwe people as magical woven webs made from willow and sinew to filter out bad dreams only allow good dreams and thoughts to pass through to the sleeper. They are handmade in the shape of a hoop or tear drop, with a web woven on the frame and then decorated with sacred items such as feathers and beads.

Build you own dreamcatcher and hang it over your bed or make one for your child to help them deal with nightmares. Better yet, support your local First Nations Community by buying an authentic Dreamcatcher directly from an aboriginal craftsperson such as BeadedDreams (who also sells supplies for making your own dreamcatchers.)

These Whimsical DIY Dreamcatcher inspired projects are for the most part far from the traditional Native American style but are gorgeous to hang as wall decor . Be inspired by a project that may be a great way to spark conversation about North America’s Aboriginal peoples with your own children.
