Your child’s first birthday is special. Because of how special this important milestone is, many parents decide to celebrate it with a cake smash photo shoot. A cake smash photo shoot is the perfect way to record the memories of your child’s first birthday. Not sure how to plan your cake smash photo shoot? Check out these tips.

Finding the Right Photographer

When planning your cake smash photo shoot, you’ll want to find the right photographer. If you already have a photographer that has taken pictures of your child, this person might be best to do the photo shoot if they have the experience needed for a cake smash. If not, look for a photographer that is good with young children and that has the equipment needed to do a high quality photo shoot.

Finding the Right Cake

You’ll also want to have the right cake for your cake smash photo shoot. If possible, your cake should be decorated with the theme of your child’s first birthday party. This will make the photo perfect to use for a birthday invite or as a memory for your child’s scrapbook. Many times, a baker will do both the actual birthday cake with a smash cake added on for a small fee. If not, make your own smash cake!

Decorating for the Photo Shoot

Your photographer will probably have some decorations on hand to make your smash cake photo shoot look great. However, if possible, try to use some decorations from your child’s first birthday party. Using the actual decorations for the party will give your cake smash photo shoot a more personalized look.

Dressing for the Cake Smash

Your child’s outfit is an important part of the cake smash. Often times, parents will have a nice set of clothing to start the pictures. When wearing these clothes, the cake is usually used as a simple prop. Afterwards, you will want to change your child into more appropriate attire, such as a diaper cover or tutu. This will help prevent staining on your child’s nice clothes and will make it easier to clean up after.

Preparing your Child

A lot of times, parents are disappointment with their cake smash photo shoot because their child doesn’t know what to do with the cake.

In order to eliminate this problem, you can prepare your child with a practice session. Bake a cake yourself since you don’t have to pay money to have a fancy cake for the practice photo shoot. Then, sit down with your child and play with the cake together. Get your child used to the feeling of frosting between their fingers or smeared on their cheeks. This will help make the cake smash photo shoot a smashing success!

I am a grandmother who finds this "cake smashing" thing to be just silly and wasteful. This is my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. So if you don't agree, that is ok but this is the way I view it

I was a bizarre baby. Apparently I would eat everything with 2 fingers to avoid getting dirty. My aunt wanted a cake smash photo on my first birthday...so she made me smush it. We have a cake smash photo but I'm balling my eyes out. LOL. I still have a phobia of getting fpood on my face...literally...I over wash it. hahaha
